I dunno, they always seemed rather generic to me.

From what I've read Gigaten is supposed to suffer from some major graphics issues that the Windows version didn't really fix.

Where did you get decades old Japanese PCs from anyway?  Let alone the game itself...  Japanese PC games are notoriously expensive and hard to track down.

As far as the best art to come out of the Megaten series... I can't agree with you that Giten does it better, that's for sure - it's amateurish in content and style to me.  I've never found anime-style pornography to be particularly compelling either, especially when it involves dismemberment.  Ultimately that kind of think just strikes me as silly and just distasteful and not in the good John Waters-way, the creepy Japanese subway butt toucher-way.

Kaneko has these oddball sensibilities that really sell me on his art and always has.  What ultimately sets him apart from other designers though is that he eschews the contemporary anime/manga-styles that seemingly every other Japanese artist in the field seems to be unable to break free from.  Maybe he doesn't give enough cred to the originals, you may be right, but I don't really care too much because I don't really think they looked that great to begin with.  The Digital Devil Story anime was pretty good but also fairly standard for the period.

I can throw together some banners if you want.  No offense to Tony (or whoever) but I always thought the main site was pretty ugly.  Complementary color schemes tend to look pretty pukity.

I think we should retro out the site a lot.  Maybe try to make the tables look like the old SMT menus.  It's pretty ambitious but it probably can be done.  As long as I don't have to work with code.  I know HTML, BBS code, CSS style sets, and a little bit of PERL, but I'm seriously clueless on all the rest.

Oh yeah, back to our discussion about porn games...

While tracking down box art for the intro thread I think I figured out why Giten Megami Tensei wasn't developed by Atlus...

I'm curious if the production illustrations of the Shin Megami Devils on the stat screens were all new for P3, or if they were from another game as well?

Some of them are newer, but the only strictly new ones are the Soejima illos.  The rest are culled from previous Megaten games, just with a bit of snazzed up color like what they did with Soul Hackers.  You could probably count the new ones with your fingers.

I've been watching videos on youtube and it really looks terrible to me.  Maybe the gameplay will be an improvement on P3's but honestly this game looks like doodoo.  The style and presentation is just waaaay too 'teen anime' for my tastes..

Izanami in Persona 4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMTgqeMquHc

Be warned, this video will make you want to barf.  I liked Persona because it was precisely the opposite of this sort of clichéd anime bullshit.  A bear character who says "bear" at the end of every sentence?  And why are the Persona demons from Shin Megami Tensei?  There's literally hundreds of original Persona they could have brought back from the previous games...  I mean if they were going to do that anyway it only makes sense to be consistent within the series.

God, just... ugh.  Why, Atlus?  WHY???

Well I've seen many compendiums I think, but I'm always seeing new SH Devils that I've never seen before, so they must've been incomplete I can only presume sweatdrop

There is a 'devil dictionary' disc for both Devil Summoners, but afaik they're both for Sega Saturn.  I'm pretty sure Emilio has rips of sprites from the game though.
263  Post Apocalyptic Hellscape / The Underground / Re: Introduction to MEGATEN on: September 28, 2008, 06:10:59 PM
I totally agree.  To a certain extent I think they should do the same with skills and magic.  I mean why keep Bufu (as my little brother has pointed out on numerous occasions as an English pseudonym for 'butt-fuck' ) but translate "Messiah Riser" as "Salvation."  Or "Randomizer" as "Debilitate?"

Anyways, this is what I need to fix on the post:
-Add box art for the new Raidou games.
-Add the new Raidou games to the list of Devil Summoner games.
-Add the North American box art for Persona 3 and FES.
-All the box art for the miscellaneous Megaten games.

Let me know if you notice anything else.

That might be literal in the disassociated kanji sense, but "literally" usually applies to words! It's a used word obviously, though it doesn't show up in the online JDIC. Japanese are so liberal with their words. I think anyone has the license to make up a new one whenever they feel. But this has been used for a while, and seems to appear around non-cannon Christian materials if you Google it.

Well those were pretty much my thoughts on the matter.  I'd never seen the word in context outside of Megaten so I just translated the two kanji, rather like how other people translate nakama-zoku surnames (i.e. Evil God for Jyashin, etc).  I figured you'd probably know better than I and since 'mokushiroku' is the Japanese name for the Book of Revelations, 'apocrypha' does seem like a better fit.

Personally I kind of like Japanese nonsense words.  They only usually fail when they try to do the same with English.

I don't think I've ever seen a complete compendium of SH Devil artwork confused

It's too bad too, since Soul Hackers has pretty much the coolest nakama in Megaten.  As near as I can tell though, a lot of the demons are just touched up illustrations from previous games.  You can so tell this is when digital artists were first messing around with masking layers.  static

Reading through some of the recent posts there...  face15  Yeeeeeesh.

I'm actually glad that they aren't trickling in over here.

edited: Also, I think maybe a proper translation for Giten is "apocrypha[l]".

I just went with a literal translation of 偽 (にせ), meaning false or imitation and 典 (のり), meaning celebration or a ceremony - and oddly enough, law or rule.  I'm not entirely familiar with Biblical terms in Japanese though, so 'apocrypha' could be a better fit.

Yeah, it looks like someone just made them when the games came out and forgot about them.

Weird is fair game for me.  Back when Myspace first came out I made a habit of finding the absolute weirdest people with listed profiles.  I'm pretty sure this was before you could set your profile to private.
