Title: Persona 4 Manga
Post by: Emilio Morales on March 05, 2009, 11:13:29 AM
(http://nijiko.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/p401_01_rh.jpg)

A scanlation group at RedHawk is working on the translation of the Persona 4 manga, I already talked with one of the group members, BakaScarlet to ask for their permission to post links to the manga in here and in my blog. Until now, 3 chapters are available:

Chapter 1:
Mediafire (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?odey22qjyng) | Rapidshare (http://rapidshare.com/files/205653628/Persona4_01__RH_.zip)

Chapter 2:
Mediafire (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?rzwhqbjzjlm) | Rapidshare (http://rapidshare.com/files/205654323/Persona4_02_RH.zip)

Chapter 3:
Mediafire (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?3mwzmzdtzk1) | Rapidshare (http://rapidshare.com/files/205656257/Persona4_03_RH_Full_.zip)

Raw: Mizutama
Translation: Ju-da-su
Proofreader: BakaScarlet

Typesetter: BakaScarlet
URL: http://www.redhawkscans.com/

Hopefully, they will keep up with this project, any new chapter they release will be posted in here and in "10,000 Punishments for a Sin" (http://nijiko.wordpress.com) so in the meantime, we can congratulate them with this huge contribution to the Megaten community.

PS. if anyone can make a "new" for this topic for the front page would be cool  :wink:

If you can do your best to make a page post for it, and get permission to put the scans on this site (directly readable) then I will make a "New" addition for it on the New page :smokin:

Same for any other Megaten Manga work~

^I'll tell them if I get the permission to post the images in the site like you say. I'll let you know when something comes up :wink: But in the meantime, download, download!! :danceroll:

Any word?

Should I make a preview page? Or do you think they will not share?

Go for it, lucyinthesky.  It is fine as long as you give the credit.  Other sites like MH/OM have already embedded the images in their site so why not?

^Thank you very much! And good luck with the project, keep us updated please!! :biggrin:

So, go on yksehtniycul.

Oh really? Where are they on the other sites? I know MH I think, but didn't know they had a good section for this (unless it's in the forums)

The other acronym I can't guess :rolleyes:

You will find it on places such as:

MangaHelpers (MH)
Manga Fox
One Manga (OM)
Manga Hut

and probably a few more.

Aha... I was thinking Megaten Haven for some reason :rolleyes:

I guess that would make our site the first Megaten site to make this manga available. I will set it up for reading online first... but once/when I get the Media Library section working, an archive could be made available for download. But I would leave that up to a 3rd party to upload (kinda how the Media Library will work)

I'd like to get all of these sorts of manga up. It would be even better if we could somehow make them available in different languages... and of course in the original format.

There is currently a Thai version out I believe.  As well, someone recently requested if they could reproduce it in Hebrew.

Is there a system for displaying comics in html in multiple languages used on the internet? Basically so you could just load the image with the text erased (in the bubbles) and load the text in on top of it (either graphical or fonts)

Something like that would save a lot of storage space and even bandwidth in some cases. Another way to do it, might be to save the files as animated gifs with one language on each frame. The Gif file would compress the identical pixels in each frame greatly. Probably php and or javascript could display the frames individually.

What would be a suitable English title? The literal parsing "Electric Black Demon King" sounds pretty flat. Probably if I knew more about it, I would have a better idea of what to use :sweatdrop:

Title: Re: Persona 4 Manga

Since the books section will be getting more complicated, I'd like someone to setup a page like this (http://www.digitaldevildb.com/games/) only for books at the print page (http://www.digitaldevildb.com/print/)

I'm dividing the print (Books & Manga) page up into sections such as Artbooks, Manga, Guides, Novels, and so on. So the first page in this section should list all the books we know of (unpublished fan stuff excluded) divided up under these headings. And the ones we have pages for should be links of course.

We need something setup so our books won't be too hard to find on the website... especially because so many of our digest pages are still blank.

I can't really tell by the downloads... what is the structure of this manga? Is it three volumes with more to come? Or is it a complete manga released one section at a time?

edited: I noticed the cover says "volume 5". Is Dengeki Black even the name of the Persona 4 manga? Or is that just the name of the magazine featuring the manga???????????? I'm going to need a lot of explaining I'm afraid before I can get started :confused:

Title: Re: Persona 4 Manga
Post by: Emilio Morales on March 08, 2009, 06:35:16 PM
As far as I know see, is the name of the magazine and what are you looking is just the chapters included in that magazine (a long with other mangas, so it's not just a "Persona 4 magazine"), if it were a complete tome I probably guess that it would be a lot bigger.

Found this (http://maoh.dengeki.com/black/)

That url is on the cover. I guess Ma in maoh is short for manga instead of ma as in akuma (probably a traditional japanese style pun)

PS: Seems to be available to read here:

(someone let me know if it is all there^)

edited: If so, please download the pages for us :smokin:

The manga is currently being published in Dengeki Maoh magazine.  There are no Tankoubons yet.  It is a monthly magazine, which would imply that there will be one chapter released per month - one chapter in each issue of Dengeki Maoh.  I am not really sure what you were talking about with the language thing, so I shall stay out of that.

Oh I was just asking if you/anyone knew of anything for publishing multilingual comics (I don't really follow the comics scene)

So I gotta ask. Are the three downloads Emilio posted each a one month release? Or are they all part of the same month? Also is this mag really published every month? Because it sort of looks like a quarterly mag (it says Autumn on the cover after all)

Finally I guess I should assume this manga is just called Persona 4? Btw, does it follow the same story as the game? Before or after the game?? Or is it a side adventure of some kind?

Title: Re: Persona 4 Manga
Post by: Emilio Morales on March 10, 2009, 05:11:02 PM
About the storyline, is the same with the Persona 3 manga, they follow the same exact story as the game (maybe, with a little changes, but really little). And probably each download = 1 chapter per month.

Title: Re: Persona 4 Manga
Post by: yksehtniycul on March 11, 2009, 01:28:25 AM
Ok then... now that I know more I'll try to set something up.

On a side note. It would be nice to have cover scans for the different volumes, even if the cover of the mag does not feature Persona 4. Contextual information never hurts.

It has been a while since I was here.  The downloads that Emilio posted are indeed independent magazine publishings.  The mag, Dengeki BLACK Maoh, the mag P4 was previously in before the transition to Dengeki Maoh, IS a quaterly magazine.  However, due to recent changes in popularity, the previous P3 (Dengeki Maoh) has traded places with P4 (Dengeki Black Maoh) which means that P4 is now a monthly publishing and P3 is now a quarterly publishing.  I hope that makes sense.  Yes it follows the game, at least so far.  Some things may be left out if the Mangaka deems it unnecessary, but i don't think you will have to worry about that.

On another note, I noticed Emilio's birthday is the 26th of March.  At least according to his Red Hawk registration.  As a birthday present, I will release P4 Chapter 4 on that day.  Maybe sometime time a bit earlier if I so choose.  Nevertheless, expect P4 Ch 4 before Emilio turns a year older.  :)

I will do my best to get these manga up on the website by the 26th in turn :redface:

I will officially be a year older soon as well. I was supposed to be born on April Fools day... but I guess I wasn't quite foolish enough because I was born a day early :tongue:

On the upside, sometimes my birthday gets to share Easter (that probably means so does April Fools day)

Oh yeah, any chance we can get the P3 Manga up as well? Isn't that one handled by the Starry Heaven group??

Well then.  I will be hitting two birds with one stone ;)

As for P3, the early chapters were done by Starry Heaven & Gekkoukan High Scans however we did the later chapters so if you wish to mirror them.. You know the drill.

I will probably have this finished within the next 1 to 3 days (as long as my internet doesn't go on the fritz)

http://www.digitaldevildb.com/print/manga/dengeki-maoh-p4/

I'm just going to use the same images for all of the multiple resolution images on these pages. So basically the browser will be down sizing them, which is slow and probably looks ugly on most browsers. So if someone can make thumbnails (lower resolution versions) after I get everything up, that would be nice. I think we will just need midsize ones for the gallery, and thumbnail sizes for the page where you pick your volume to start with (so just the first page of the volume)

I think the tumbnails are 150x213px. I will post the gallery page size when I figure it out :sweatdrop:

Title: Re: Persona 4 Manga

Well, I have something up. I had a real nightmare trying to fit all of this onto a gallery page. That part still isn't working. But if you click on the first image, you can go thru all the pages as a lightbox gallery (though I think some of the files might've been corrupted... let me know if something looks funny)

Title: Re: Persona 4 Manga
Post by: yksehtniycul on March 23, 2009, 07:50:12 AM
Had to take Black out of the url and titles of these pages (so some links in the bbs might be broken)

Black I take it is the quarterly mag. And at least the 3rd volume seems to appear in the monthly (non-black) mag. So that's that :doh:

Title: Re: Persona 4 Manga

Horay :eek:

I finally managed to somehow someway get all of the major features I'd intended for the manga reading galleries to work :doh:

The exercise was really killer, but I think I learned a lot along the way. Which is at the end of the day the only honest to god reason I stick with this stuff so ardently I think :hearton:

Anyway, yeah it can use a hell of a lot more polish around the edges, but I think I can officially herald the P4/P3 manga on the "new" page sometime soonish...

Many of the files are still corrupted. I'm a little disappointed I don't have a good thumbnailing system worked out yet. But anyway, if anyone would like to make some lower resolution versions of the manga images, it would make the presentation much better. I'm just really not up to it for now :crying:

The sizes for the viewing page are 450px wide for single pages, and 900px wide for double pages. I've noticed the aspect ratio isn't always perfect, so it might be a good idea to pick a median height and distort the image heights to get a constant aspect.

And... if someone wants to prepare small thumbnails all of the same height, I will promise to setup a nifty slide viewer so that while hovering the mouse over the page numbers a black bar full of thumbnail slides closest to the page with appear under the number bar :ninja:

Sooner or later I will decide on an automated system for thumbnails, but just saying. It isn't a a huge job, and it would make the pages much nicer.

I put hours into this, so please don't hold back your praise or dare feel uninspired :megaman:

That reminds me... I still need to re-upload these files. I think I'm going to try something to generate intermediary sized images sooner or later as well.

The problem with using sites like RapidShare is you can't really download them without a browser session :sweatdrop:

Could someone please help me download the P3 manga and fill me in on anything I need to know. Also do we need permission from Starry Heaven to treat it similarly?

I know mangatraders.com (http://mangatraders.com) has all the releases (however you have to set up an account with them) but if you'd prefer I can upload the versions I have onto Rapidshare or Megaupload and you can just download them from there.

Title: Re: Persona 4 Manga
Post by: yksehtniycul on March 30, 2009, 04:19:00 PM
I think there are probably public places to download these, but we do still need to get permission from the Starry Heaven group, unless they've passed on their consent to the Red Hawk group (since Red Hawk apparently took over "scanlation" from what I understand)

PS: I still need to make sure the P4 images are not corrupted, and get the new 4th volume up... so we can afford to take things slowly (I still haven't made an official announcement for these pages on the front page, and it will be a little while before I feel the new technology on these pages is ready to showcase that matter)

Title: Re: Persona 4 Manga

Ok, four is up... and I think I will go ahead and put a link on the NEW page. On a positive note I was also able to remote wget mediafire without downloading it to my own computer then uploading it to the server. Just setup the download then was able to trace the link, which fortunately didn't care that the IP downloading wasn't the same requesting :sweatdrop:

Emilio, I hate to ask too much of you... but I'd really appreciate it if you could help the database out with getting permission on the P3 scanlations and all. Also please post links up where I can download them. I do so much for the website, but it doesn't help if I'm doing stuff that others are able to do.

Of course if anyone else would like to take the burden off Emilio, please just let us know you're on it :hearton:

Title: Re: Persona 4 Manga
Post by: Emilio Morales on April 04, 2009, 04:14:57 PM
^I'm taking care of this already :wink: I have already the permission from BakaScarlet, aka Arisato to make mirrors from a few Persona 3 chapters, so once I finish downloading them I'll upload them to mediafire/rapidshare and then I'll talk with "Mienai" to see if he gives me the permission for the rest of the chapters.

So once I have all the permissions and mirrors ready, I'll let you know. :rolleyes:

I don't believe this is true.  We never got into contact with Starry Heaven, so their scans are still strictly theirs.  As for the Persona 3 chapters, all the upcoming chapters will have a megaupload link as I now have access to the group's account which I didn't have before.

If we still don't know anything definite about the P3 scanlations, and someone has the files... due to the past involvement of Tony with the Starry Heaven group from what I can tell, I will go ahead and put them up until someone asks that they be taken down :smokin:

Title: Re: Persona 4 Manga

I developed some code that generates the preview and thumbnail images automatically. The results seem really good. I will get around to using the thumbnails eventually, but for now the pages should load up much faster. I also manually resized the cover pages for the first page where you can pick your starting volume.

Code:
<?php

if(!$manga_pages//make previews/thumbs

{

exec('ls '.$_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].$manga_path,$manga_images);

exec('mkdir '.$_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].$manga_path.'previews');

exec('mkdir '.$_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].$manga_path.'thumbs');

$gd_warning 0;

  foreach(
$manga_images as $image
  {

$file $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].$manga_path.$image;

    list(
$w,$h) = getimagesize($file); //todo: should do something if width is 0??

$src$ext substr($image,-3);

    switch(
$ext)
    {
    case
'gif'$src imagecreatefromgif($file); break;
    case
'jpg': case 'jpeg'$src imagecreatefromjpeg($file); break;
    case
'png'$src imagecreatefrompng($file); break;
    }

$pw $w>$h?900:450$ph $pw/$w*$h$tw 150.0/$h*$w;

$preview imagecreatetruecolor($pw,$ph); imageantialias($preview,true);

$thumb imagecreatetruecolor($tw,150);   imageantialias($thumb,true);

imagecopyresampled($preview,$src,0,0,0,0,$pw,$ph,$w,$h);

imagecopyresampled($thumb,$src,0,0,0,0,$tw,150,$w,$h);

$previewfile $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].$manga_path.'previews/'.$image;

$thumbfile $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].$manga_path.'thumbs/'.$image;

    switch(
$ext)
    {
    case
'gif'imagegif($thumb,$thumbfile); imagegif($preview,$previewfile); break;
    case
'jpg': case 'jpeg'imagejpeg($thumb,$thumbfile); imagejpeg($preview,$previewfile); break;
    case
'png'imagepng($thumb,$thumbfile); imagepng($preview,$previewfile); break;
    }

imagedestroy($preview); imagedestroy($thumb);  imagedestroy($src);

$gd_warning 1;
  }
 }
?>

This is a start... but there is still a lot to be done in terms of user convenience here :sweatdrop:

Title: Re: Persona 4 Manga
Post by: yksehtniycul on April 25, 2009, 10:33:33 PM
I spent a good chunk of my afternoon working on the thumbnails... mostly making them popup and go away when I wanted them to. It was pretty humiliating, but at least I learned a lot about Javascripts onmouseover and onmouseout event... or basically how retarded/limited the specification is when nested elements are involved :sick:

PS: For my next trick I'll make the thumbnail slideshow center itself on the page number the mouse is over (just as soon as I'm able to regather my spirits)

PPS: Fuck it! Done (and so am I :goodnight:)

Title: Re: Persona 4 Manga
Post by: yksehtniycul on April 26, 2009, 11:13:35 AM
I don't think the P3 manga is related, so probably wouldn't hurt to read them in any order.

As for the whole Javascript setup, I still need to let the reader know the page is loading somehow, and preload nearby pages so it doesn't take as long to skim thru. Though that already happens if you read it in the high resolution mode, which is probably what most first time readers (as opposed to peepers) would end up doing. Javascript is such a pain to work with. Flash might make more sense, but it requires plugins and I refuse to learn Flash I think. The evolution of internet technology is pretty messed up. There probably needs to be a completely new kind of webpage that supercedes html and all related technologies (that definitely isn't pure Flash websites -- that's by far worse... the scourge of the internet as far as I'm concerned)
