Title: Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Post by: dilapoid on August 21, 2005, 07:43:43 PM
This is the only game of the MegaTen games I've played, and thus far it's been very enjoyable.  Tony's the one that turned me on to the game.

Thus far the aspect I enjoy the most is the demon-fusing/ collecting, because it's very reminiscent of Pokemon and it's why I've always loved Pokemon.  The game also has some rock-paper-scissors-like mechanics as well, just like Pokemon, which add a nice breadth of depth to the battle system.

Overall, I'd have to agree with Tony in saying that this is the best RPG on the PS2.

It's a pretty hard game.  I've been frustrated many times: when fighting those oni bosses (were those ever BITCHES), and so on.  I like the challenge, though.  It makes you want to overcome the odds.

I'd like to see what this game is like on Hard mode.  It's already so hard on Normal.  :redxdance

It's better than Pokemon. If anything, Pokemon can be accused of stealing a lot of the mechanics from Megami Tensei. Though, I enjoyed Gold/Silver very much.

Nocturne is thus far, a very enjoyable experience. However, I left the game in the cave of the Oni because I died accidentally and found myself going about other things.

To be honest, I haven't found the battles extremely difficult yet, except my first few attempts at The Matador. That was very unfair, however, after a few tries and changes of strategy, I finally overcame him. I must note that the battles are considerably more difficult than other RPGs though.

My favourite scenes so far though were the ones with Gozu Tennoh. They were pretty disturbing at times, and yet enthralling.

I had a great experience with Nocturne, too bad I don't own it and was leeching it off a friend for awhile.  I might think of asking her about it later so that I can play it again, else I shell out money on Ebay.

I can pretty much say that it was a very fun game, I only got up to Thor and couldn't beat him in time, but it was still fun.  Matador gave me a hell of a time because I was under leveled and didn't think of bringing Force absorbing/null demons, not to mention I was seriously under leveled.

If I remember correctly, X-Play gave SMT:N a five out of five (a rare thing, indeed) and said it was the best RPG of 2005(4?), and I whole heartily agree with it.  There are so many great things in this game that you won't find in a standard RPG, it's what makes this game so great.

Yeah, they did. The only other RPG they've given that score to (at least since I last saw) was Knights of the Old Republic. I can't say I really care for the show all that much, but it's nice to see it get a good review.

It's been a long time since I've played this game, relatively speaking. Since then I've finished several other titles and gone through DDS, so my memories of Nocturne are rather blurred.

I have to start playing through it again so I can get its section on D3 going... maps, demonary and whatever else.

Matador was easy as hell for me.  I beat him the second time around. . .

The final Oni boss in the cave place was the biggest bitch of a boss thus far.  It took me about 15 tries to finally win, and it was a glorius victory indeed after being frustrated, so very frustrated.

Now I'm stuck at the Moriae sisters: I've battled each of them alone and when you go to battle them again they keep running away like before.  I'm going to be looking at a FAQ in moments to figure out what the hell I have to do to pass them.

Title: Re: Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Post by: Early Archer on August 28, 2005, 11:10:18 PM
You just have to beat the Moirae sisters in the right order. I belive it was Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos. Once you've done it a path will open. You will fight them again, and this time it will be all 3 at the same time, but it's really easy if you got strong demons.
I got stuck at them in my first playtrough. My demons were too obsolete.:xd: I had too do lots and lots of fusions, after that, it was ridiculously easy. A high lvl Kishin is a good choice as always.

Nocturne was a great game. The only thing that irked me was the fact that you could once you got rid of a skill it was gone forever. That definately made for some rough early games when I wasn't sure which skill was better and ended up stuck with some real lousy skill choices.

But the biggest question about the game has not been answered: What happened to that guy's shirt?

The protagonist's shirt, or Nitta's? If we're talking the protagonist then... Lucifer's a goddamn thief. That's what I think.

I am talking about the protagonist's shirt. I had always assumed that those face... things ate Nitta's shirt.

That sucked! Or not... You had to plan everything much more carefully. I personaly like DDS system better, much more flexible.

Nocturne is a great game, very hard, but very cool. One of my toughest challenge was to fill the Demon Conpemdum to 100% on my first try, and I was able to achive my goal. I have played a lot of RPGs in the past, and I was able to beat each, and every one of them after 50 hours when I play them the first time, but I have never spent more than 130 hours during my first try on Nocturne.

Lucifer's Call is just the title name for the European release of SMT III Nocturne Maniax.  Same game.

You'll have to keep in mind that European versions of the title run at PAL, however. In Japan and America, games use the NTSC standard. There's probably ways around it (I know on the GameCube, the Pro Action Replay can get past this somehow), but it's something to keep in mind because it may not work properly right away.

nilivanili > Lucifer's Call, as said before, is the same as SMT Nocturne.
Also, Ubi soft made a great job with the localisation, you can choose to play in 60hz and there are multiples langages (french, deutsh, english, and maybe more ?), the translation is good (at least for the french one).
So if you live in Europe, go get Lucifer's Call :guitar:

The translations are good? I had heard bad things... but, then again, I think that was only about the German translation, which you wouldn't be using heh.

Hi everyone. Can I have a request?

I'd like to have either a video, or a few shots of the magatama. I mean that one spinning around on the loading screen. I've been searching the net for days now, But I can't find a good picture...

Btw: I love this game, It's a bit strange, but way better than any other rpgs I've ever played. I love it's music too. (I was just killed by the hellbiker)

It said this:

'When you wake up in the hospital, that's it, you've completed the Labyrinth of
Amala.  Note, if you did not get the final scene then it probably means you
entered the Tower of Kagutsuchi before completing this, meaning you cannot get
the special ending.

One thing to note now with your new demon form; you have unlocked the final
skill of Marogareh, Pierce; it is one of the best skills in the game.'

I recently popped this into my PS2 again. It's weird to play after DDS 1&2 because you see ways in which those titles improved upon the game engine. I don't remember the walking animation and controls being this wonky before heh.

Looking forward to getting another ending this time around though. Any one else going to start playing this one again? If you don't even have it, Atlus.com has it in their store right now.

It's a very great RPG... I think Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2 are the best... but Nocturne lists exactly after. It a great game with an excelent story... a little demoniac, but very enjoyable and funny. It speak sometimes about God's creation and some other religions, so... that's why I like it...

I still prefer Noctune´s style and story, I`m a sucker for post-apocalyptic stuff :buh:.
The whole religious thing makes the games even better, the soundtracks are awsome, and Kaneko´s artwork it´s just... :ooooh:

I've been meaning to play this game again. I played the original so I'm thinking of trying out the Maniacs version with Dante in it. Plus, the extra amounts of story does sound interesting. I enjoyed the game a lot and I miss my demon goddess, Parvati! XD

The music was also fun to listen to. Sure I can just stick the soundtrack into my CD player right now but it's much more enjoyable playing the game with the music in the background. :)

My favorite would be Matador. I really like it's design and it was one of the most useful fiends for me besides the priest guy.

I still need to go beat the game... I'm on the last part of both the Amala Labrynth and the Main game, and I haven't played it for a while.

That fact that skills are lost forever once you replace them gets me all goofy. I'm indecisive enough as it is, but now I have to figure out what skills I NEED to have by the final battle and also the skills I need to equip in between in order to be able to make it through the game without getting my ass handed to me. >.>  I always get that nagging little voice whenever I learn a new skill taunting, "Dooon't f**k up... Doooon't f**k up... Press the button! Haaa!" And then I overwrite Elemental Resist with Dia. SO, if any of that makes sense to anyone else... >.>

I get it, but you need to relax. There is such a plethora of great skills, that you needn't worry. Just build the character however you want. The difficulty level of Nocturne is really overblown at times.

I found that Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne was a really too expensive game, all the place I look for it, is the same EXPENSIVE!!! And the same with Avatar Tuner 1, the only place I`ve looked for, is in ebay, and again, EXPENSIVE!!

I think I will not get Avatar Tuner at a good price, damn I just need that game to complete the story, and I don`t understand all of the story of Avatar Tuner 2, without the first. :frown::frown:

It seems to be going for as much, if not more, than Suikoden 2 on eBay. Though, at least with Shin Megami Tensei 3 you're getting your money's worth. Suikoden 2 is just awful, and totally not worth more than like, $25. I don't advise anyone pay more than $50 for Shin Megami Tensei 3, though. No video game is worth more than that. People on eBay are out of their goddamned minds.

Makes me happy that I bought Nocturne when it first came out, I'm just sorry I didn't do the same with DDS 1 & 2.  Now I'm looking for a reasonable price, but I'm afraid I'll end up paying through the ears if I don't find it at local game stores.

Scratch four so far.  =/

A friend of mine is a huge, wait H-U-G-E, Suikoden II fan. Back when he first beat it I listened to weeks of pre hype. So when he placed it in my paws I was super excited. But after an hour or so I turned off the ps1. I understand that rpg plots occassionally take hours for the story to kick in, but Suikoden IIs plot was so by the books. Main character and best friend fighting an empire. Check. Seperated from best friend later to become rival. Check. A mysterious girl. Check. It was a little too much for me. Rpgs for me dont have to be incredible original, see the standout Grandia, but do something different!

I havent found a copy of Nocturne yet, but I will eventually and at a low price. The only rpg I have been giddy enough to pay a high fee was Panzer Dragoon Saga. My saturn was getting no love and I had Dragoon 1 and Zwei so, yep. I bought it five years ago for around 80 bucks and have yet to regret it. Though it hasnt aged super well, ugh I hate the language the characters speak.

That's probably why Suikoden II felt like such a huge disappointment. I was expecting this epic adventure since everyone spoke of it as if it was the greatest RPG of all time, and what I got was something that couldn't even rival the first Suikoden game. It was boring. I kept waiting for the story to pick up, and it never did. It's too bad such an awesome villain like Luca Blight was wasted on such a boring and overrated video game. I also couldn't stand how homoerotic Jowy was. Konami was probably trying to appeal to the female crowd, but all it did was annoy the hell out of me.

Sega needs to figure out a way to get Panzer Dragoon Saga out to the [English-speaking] masses. Xbox Marketplace or the PlayStation Network is probably our best bet. Or, packing it in with a new Panzer Dragoon game, kind of like what they did with Panzer Dragoon Orta.

Also, I enjoy the fictional language. I like that the developer actually put some effort into creating the language, and that it's not just a bunch of gibberish. I'm glad Team ICO took the same route in using a fictional language for their fictional universe.

The battle with Luca Blight was awesome, just to prepare your 3 (3? I remember they were 3 teams, was long ago u.u) teams to attack him, I remember I spent the whole night training and gaining exp, so I can kick Luca Blight´s ass quicker. It was really coo, I enjoy the game :smug:.

Heh,that's the one game I have been Dying to play....but couldn't get,due to how high it is on ebay.I remember it being up to 500,or probably more? Don't know what it ranges now.... ..but I have to agree, that would be a great idea if they actually went ahead with doing that.I haven't played Orta though,my last Panzer Dragoon game was Zwei.

Amala really does make maniacs worth it. You get chased by Dante, fight Metatron, and talk to Lucifer. Whats not to like?

It is by far...the greatest RPG have in my collection..I played it the other day, my 5th play though. I was at the Tower of Kata 2 and I just pwned Noah, and then...a Throne instantly kills me. :bs:

Nocturne was the first megaten game i ever saw, and i loved it. ive been an rpg fan for years, and nocturne was finally a breath of fresh air from all the "nicey nice get a group of friends and save the world from the nasty man!" cliche you get in most of the famous rpgs like final fantasy and dragon quest. To me, megaten is to final fantasy what battlestar gallactica is to star trek. you thought you knew good, then this comes in and shows you just how wrong you are by showing just how gritty and dark the genre can get, and i loved it.

and my favourite demon has to be Kikuri Hime. i always loved her because i got Mediaramafrom fusing her REAL early in the game, so i could heal back to max in one spell. ahhhhh, the memories

Surely my favorite Megami Tensei game and the only one to be translated into my native language.

I had some question about it, I am just after the Nihilo attack and I must go to the Kabukicho prison. But I tried to fight Daisoujou several times and I didn't manage to kill him. I know he is an optional boss and he has no weak spot, so can I leave him, go to Kabukicho and come back later to beat him??
thank you.

Now, I remember one part of the game very well because it was probably the weirdest atmosphere in the videogame history ever. It's the part in (SPOILER) Mifunashiro where Chiaki and the Divines are slaying the Manikins (near the end of the game). (END SPOILER) I found that part of the game totally bizarre.

Question:
I just started playing and took pixie to the garden/park place where she told me to. She wanted to leave me but I responded "No don't leave me" and she stayed. Will anything bad happen if I fuse her at this point?
Since I got to the fuse place after finding out the Park was pretty much locked up and can now fuse, I'm wondering if not having her will wreck the plot...or can I just get another pixie....

You can fuse the Pixie as long as you keep the result demon with you along the way, since you will see an special event at the Amala Labyrinth if you have the first Pixie of the game or the fused demon, but if you leave her or fuse her, nothing wrong will happen to the plot.

Also, if you don't fuse her she will change into a Queen Mab later.
