Title: Persona 4
Post by: Emilio Morales on September 17, 2008, 01:20:59 PM
I'll open the topic so we can discuss about it. And because I didn't know that Persona 4 will come with a "Persona 4 Visual Data" artbook! I really can't wait now :dazed:

I actually pre-ordered Persona 4 which comes out with pretty cool stuff.

If anyone wants some scans of the art book once I receive it feel free to ask, I'll just show you a page or two seeing as showing the whole thing would take too much time considering the amount of pages.

So who else pre-ordered?

Once I get my D&D books (4th edition) I will pre-order P4. I just can't miss the opportunity of having that art book O_O

I haven't pre-ordered yet,but I will eventually.

The goodies I'm not all that excited about it..mainly the artwork scans will eventually be on the net, mainly Kei's site as usual.
And the OST I already heard...I can only stand just a few songs on it,in my opinion,I like P3's OST better..but that's just my personal taste
in what I like and dislike between the two.

But it's good to know Atlus decided to add those goodies with the game.

I've been watching videos on youtube and it really looks terrible to me.  Maybe the gameplay will be an improvement on P3's but honestly this game looks like doodoo.  The style and presentation is just waaaay too 'teen anime' for my tastes..

Well, an acquaintance of mine played the japanese version and absolutely loved it.
The same person absolutely hated P3 though... :sweatdrop:

But it's good to know Atlus decided to add those goodies with the game.

I've always wondered why they do this.  I mean, obviously it's to make up for the lack of that kind of thing being published on this side of the Pacific, but it's also a pretty obvious marketing ploy to make fans dish out more than they normally would for a game.  It also essentially makes collectors items out of the packaged deal, though not nearly as bad as ebayers jacking up prices on imports.

For example:

Can someone please tell me why Maniacs is 300 effing dollars + shipping for a USED game?

MANIAX for $307USD????????????? (http://cgi.ebay.com/Shin-Megami-Tensei-III-Nocturne-Maniax-PS2-IMPORT-USED_W0QQitemZ200174231146QQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116)

Just some Japanese shop fishing for dumb overseas gaijin

It's not even a new copy. I do a "tensei import" search now and then, it's always there. Like that ICO import for 150$.

It just boggles the mind.  :geno:

I guess it's out of print in Japan but still...  Who has $300+ to drop on a video game?

If you have not pre-ordered P4 yet, here's your chance to get some stuff which is actually...similiar to the Konamistyle Edition:

http://kotaku.com/5060819/amazon-offers-persona-4-social-link-expansion-pack

Amazon.com (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=0018Fh_gd-_xaZM-uCkl4A8JhQSVfGXyTKAXyl_KkFxwKw1I_NanP9UetfegPvYF3EQ8arfxGMPI9zhCYp1l2fxqbWnSDp_vuaM_G8mj47S0_Ddn5h2uiQ8rKC4vduvcgjrFQIpDi5aevfbM8vVnxasHMMH5fM2TFvHCwEmn1K8_xkgLVDmiEus60gG7Qf0Am_EMGTQHFhI5-mfaDUAzUev_Ef4E2N1_ki7kdRQiM1K5KzQ9XN0DZUG5CESl6SRJTc17Sd8BWKWgL9-SYYDVd_L5oZOF8Rac84O)

I dislike the Persona on the t-shirt...since I like the main character's better.

And the Konamistyle Edition:

Really cool merchandise, but I haven't pre-order my copy of P4 yet! >_< so I guess I'll have to take care of that first and then see if I'm able to buy that other pack or merchandise.

Don't get too excited

I played a copy of P4 DevilRy found one night for more than two hours of just hitting the circle button over and over immediately and nothing else, and the game still had not begun!!

It was honestly the weirdest thing ever... I can't really figure out how we got to this point as gamers

During the whole time I saved five times without ever playing anything, just in case I tried to get to the gameplay later. But I never did, and I never saw any gameplay. Eventually I found out the dialog would progress automatically, so I just left the game alone until it finished so I didn't even have to suffer through jamming on the circle button. Still no gameplay in sight :ninja:

Either way, I hope you can still find time to help with the demonary. I know you've already helped soooo much, but it would be cool to actually fully finish one (subsequent ones won't be as complicated as the first fortunately)

There's a lot we need to do with the demonary and we totally need some help, 'cause lately the Internet service here on my office has been pretty shitty, and I can barely finish all the work that I have to do. I will try to find time for the demonary but in the meantime, it would be cool to start asking for help in other places.

I think most people freak out over the new Personas because they're basically pseudo-interactive anime.  I like some of the visual style and presentation, but the gameplay is virtually nonexistent.  North American reviewers are giving it unbelievably high scores...  1up.com A+, GamePro 5/5, IGN 9.0, Wired magazine gave it 10/10.  It makes me wonder if they even played the game...  I mean they did sit through the two hours of cut scenes at the beginning, right?

Maybe I should give it another chance...  I just wish it was in anyway engaging.

Title: Re: Persona 4

I thought the gameplay in P3 was sufficient, and didn't find the dating sim elements tedious... it could've jumped into the action sooner, but wasn't ridiculous. P4 on the other hand is ridiculous times at least 10 (depending on how many hours without any gameplay at all!! -- or cutscenes afaik for that matter)

Maybe it's supposed to be a game for the people who played P3, played FES, and still haven't had enough!! At which point I suppose, if I'd gone that far down the rabbit hole, there's a chance I could bear it... though it would still make me wanna put an evoker to the Atlus CEO's head (or possibly up his ass -- though probably he's been there done that)

Frankly I couldn't get over the fact that any game like that existed... it was worse than 80s adventure game setups! This rant isn't over... but I've shit to do (discuss)

Oh yeah, fuck the fact Atlus wasted a sequel on P4 (FF13 is lagging behind, quick let's catch up...) and fuck the three character names while I'm at it!! Wtf, we have fewer characters to work with than FF1 now  ooo(and I'm gonna have to come up with a clever set of kanji that phonetically imitate my gaijin ass name)

Uh what? I had no problems at all with the intro, and once I got into the meat of the game I found some fantastic gameplay improvements that more than made up for the wait. The intro is long, yes, but there's enough interactivity and setup for the plot to make it worthwhile. Then again, I liked Xenosaga and MGS4 so take it as you will.

TL;DR - Stick with the game for a while you ADHD douches.

I have a hard time calling something that is non-interactive and requires 2hrs plus of insipid back and forth dialogue a game. I'm not saying it's wrong... but it's probably really bad game design by any standard. At the least such a game requires a new genre :ninja:

Maybe there is a game tacked on to the end somewhere but if so I'm not sure asking people to sit on their ass like that for sooooo long is fair. I think we hardly have time to play games in the first place, much less not even get to twiddle our thumbs for two hours

Finally because of the demanding setup, it's hard to imagine new players being picked up by P4. So you have to wonder if it was appropriate to blow the #4 on this one. I bet there are some expansion games on the way, or the 4 would've probably been held back. I think the whole TV/Murderer scenario sounds like it might be cool... and I keep wondering where will the Velvet Room will show up next from game to game?? I would just prefer to jump right into a game, at least as efficiently as every Atlus RPG has to this point.

Btw... If anyone out there does really digs P4, we could really use a P4 section for the website :crying:

I'm beginning to wonder if we'll ever find a single soul to do serious writing for the website again :sweatdrop:

DevilRy can't do it all. We don't need English majors, just a fans with time to kill. We can edit articles if necessary -- not to mention articles are good for money for as long as the article is up and the website ads are bringing in some bacon.

Here is a review I noticed in our advertisements...

http://www.g4tv.com/xplay/reviews/1896/Persona_4_Review.html

I saw another online review the other day that mentioned it taking 4hrs to get to the gameplay, but it didn't seem to bother the reviewer...

I'm not sure what the world is coming to, but if it takes hours before you get to play anything that should be printed right beside the sticker. If I rented a game and didn't get to play anything for that long, I'd return it and not leave without a refund / be pissed as hell.

Well, it's true that you spend between 3 and 4 hours until finally play the game, but to tell you the truth, I didn't mind it, I was enjoying the story. But it would be tedious for someone who wants to jump to the action right away. :nolaff:

The struggle is made that much more epic when Japanese isn't your first language.

I'm thinking I'll be lazy with this one too and wait around for the undub.

Personally I'm thinking it might've been worse in English... but the translation job has been getting a lot of praise; but forgive me if I'm skeptical / totally used that semicolon in the wrong way

I think the fights were finished just by jamming the same button as moves along the dialogue. The one big boss seemed complicated, but I'm not sure the game would let you loose against him (I think I did resort to his weakpoint just to move the game along )

I'm on the final dungeon myself after 60 hours of playing.

I'm torn, though; on the one hand, the gameplay elements have been improved a lot; the way Down works is a nice change, jumping back into a dungeon from the floor you left off is great, and S-Links are definitely improved (choosing friend or lover, hanging out with multiple people at once, and unlocking new attacks and abilities in battle is superb) but...

...well, the story gets in the way. A lot. The two hour introduction is probably the worst offender, but there's plenty of times where you're just advancing text. It's good text (the translation can be too literal at times, like a fansub. I think P3 did a better job) and the voice acting is just as good as P3 (save for Chie and Teddie), but you're not playing a video game during those segments. You're just reading. It's like a visual novel until it remembers "oh yea, the gameplay!"

I think P3 is still more appealing, but it'll be hard to go back after the luxuries that P4 gave me for the past 60+ hours.
