I don't even think the shoot yourself in the head thing is that odd. In a symbolic sense, it's pretty cool I think.

It's unique, evokers are necessary because Philemon is AFK or lazy this time around.

It's at least slightly more interesting than yelling out "Persona!" in a terrible voice.

I don't know. They had some good voices for EP.

It's true MegaTen games get weird so I can't fault Penny Arcade for parodying that aspect. lol. The way it looks "evokers" are not even real guns that actually splatter brains. Maybe when the trigger is pulled they expel magic energy that helps people concentrate of their inner forms more clearly. Or they let out psychadelic acid smoke that makes people trip.

Persona 3 has already been labeled as an "emo rpg". Can't say  if I'm tickled by that diagnosis but I still think it'll be  a great game  + I pre-ordered it.

It's ok, I didn't really laugh that much. An interesting idea, on a touchy subject obviously would get reactions like this. But, anyway, reading anything about Persona makes me want to play it so much more. I don't know what it is about Persona, but I'm really excited about it. About as excited as I got when I saw and ordered Nocturne and DDS. I've never, for quite some time, been this excited about getting games, since I found out about SMT.

I got into Shin Megami Tensei by picking up Revelations Persona years ago Neao. Likely it wasn't the best first impression but I enjoyed it because the story telling was so different. I was lucky to get DDS saga 1 and 2 but Nocturne evaded me because it was seen as "contraversial" for awhile after its release. This time I played it smart and ordered Persona  3 online to avoid Game-store politics.

Get Nocturne as soon as you can, if you haven't already. The SMT games I have played (which are a few) have been incredible, so far.

I think shooting yourself in the head to summon your Persona, is one of the most interesting and cool facts of the game. And I think this is just pure originality, because I dont have seen this in other games. It`s cool and gives the game a big touch of originality.

Well it's obivous the game is not for kids. I think the evoker style symbolic suicide is alot neater then say holding up a card. I just worry something dumb is going to happen and a parent going to scream "Billy did it after playing Persona 3!" That got GTA San Andreas in trouble awhile even though the woman was a guardian that got the game for her child fully knowing it had a "mature" rating. But at the very least I doubt Persona 3 has a hot coffee mod...hmmm...then again it is part dating sim. :azn:

Title: Re: penny arcade persona 3 comic
Post by: Tony on August 10, 2007, 03:50:19 PM
I've actually played a few games where the main character can commit suicide and they're probably around as successful as Persona 3 will be. Persona 3 simply isn't big enough for these groups to latch on to.

Like explained, the Evoker doesn't do any damage anyway. No bullets or anything.

I don't know if they ever explain it, but as far as I am into it, there's been absolutely no discussion of what makes it work. Definitely just seems like a stylistic choice, but it's one I can see some disapproving of or not liking. That's fair to me.

Yeah being the "under-dog" is going to serve to Atlus's benefit this time. Then again I thought Nocturne would slip by the fundy radar and it didn't. Getting Nocturne in my city became the single most epic challenge of  all. Needless to say I couldn't find it but I was  smarter with Persona 3 and pre-ordered.

I see how the symbolic suicide "could" disturb some people especially the light hearted whimsical rp crowd but as you said Tony there's no bullets, blood,or splattered brain matter. lol. :king:

Penny arcade doing a parody of persona may help sales and the reviews I have read are overwelmingly positive. I really hope the more conservative aspects in the American media dont get onto this otherwise every teen suicide for the next 5 years will be blamed on persona.

Not to mention every incident of japanese kids fighting shadows alongside Androids and dogs in schools with in depth charaters.

The characters really  seem to be well thought out this time around. Granted science fiction and cyber punk inspirations make things more quirky then again how realistic is HS students fighting for the fate of man-kind anyway? As usual at least Atlus is trying to stay true to originality. I find the concept of P3 far more appealing then most of the new breed of rpgs hitting shelves.

To me...eh, it wasn't that funny.

Besides that, like someone mentioned...the method does have a meaning, and doing a parody of it feels sort of...weird.

Title: Re: penny arcade persona 3 comic
Post by: nightsavior on August 11, 2007, 08:05:31 AM
I try not to take anything too seriously especially parodies. If anything Penny arcade's cheap shot about Atlus's eccentricities likely will help the game sell better. In my opinion comedic artists will only target something that is "good" or at the very least "anticipated". It's like that in show biz too. The actors and actresses they are doing well are also the ones that get "spoofed" so to speak.

Bulimic witches would be fun.

The Shin Megami Tensei series as a whole aren't that big over here. I mean. c'mon, Lucifer's Call (the PAL Nocturne). I mean, the "True" Ending is obvious anyway and no one batted an eyelid.

The Evoker thing is a very awesome stylistic choice and it will indeed be more interesting than just yelling "Persona" again and again. Chris in Revelations sounds like a 60-a-day smoker when he yells it (made me giggle).

I agree - if all Penny Arcade can come up with is that parody then Persona 3 will hopefully be immense. I've heard it's playtime is 80 to 105 hours as well.

Can't wait!

I never understood why Dante was put in Nocturne other then perhaps the main SMT artist did his devil design. Yuri from Shadow-hearts and shadow-hearts covenant likely would have been a better choice. The Shadowhearts mythos parallels that of the SMT universe quite closely IMO.

I think some people making Nocture thought it would be cool.

Title: Re: penny arcade persona 3 comic
Post by: nightsavior on August 11, 2007, 05:33:32 PM
Yeah and at least it was the older more mature Dante in Nocturne as he was in DMC 1 instead of the arrogant dog and pony  show complete with corny catch phrases "young Dante" from DMC 3. Yet I admire DMC in that they show Dante grow up and how he wasn't always the same. I still prefer his personality from DMC 1 though.

Well I think some other game designer may have cornered the bulemic witches market.

Not sure about the point of this game is and it kinda scares me but here you go.

Under 15's may not want to read/see this as your minds are sensitive.

Um no. Yuri does not fit SMT at all.

Shadow Hearts parralel to SMT? lol SH is light heated. SMT is anything but, aside from the Persona series, and even that is darker than all of the SH games.

Title: Re: penny arcade persona 3 comic
Post by: nightsavior on August 11, 2007, 07:46:08 PM
The first SH wasn't light hearted. And SH does actually go into real mythology and real history. Of course in covenant you are right they added more humor. But even in SMT you have the Jack frost brothers and certain comedic moments. I''d call SMT mostly grim but not without its more light hearted areas. Dante fit in only because of his devil design. If you think hard on his personality though he does stand out like a sore thumb in the SMT  universe. Sure he is a demon-slayer but he also is that "unrealistically perfect pretty boy" stereotype. Dante is far more flash then substance. However at least they used mellowed out DMC 1 Dante and not overly obnoxious and full of himself DMC 3 Dante. Don't get  me wrong I love DMC and own all three games I just think Dante's world despite having demons in it is a far cry from SMT.

Title: Re: penny arcade persona 3 comic
Post by: Himuro on August 11, 2007, 07:52:33 PM
SH1 is the only SH that stands out imo. I greatly dislike the other two. Real world events? That has little to do with SMT, though. SMT is more about supernatural events happening in a real world setting.

Title: Re: penny arcade persona 3 comic
Post by: Lycanthroat on August 11, 2007, 08:48:52 PM
Regardless, in an RPG world full of kiddy storylines, SMT and Shadow Hearts are some of the few that stand out.

I thought it was pretty cool, the Devil May Cry 2 Dante (my favourite one) was in Lucifer's Call. Capcom love cameo-ing their characters in other games and I was pretty spiffed with Dante being in my group. It's not like he hugely affected the storyline or anything, so why not?

(I love that comic kekeke)

Title: Re: penny arcade persona 3 comic
Post by: nightsavior on August 11, 2007, 09:45:16 PM
DMC 1-2 Dante is at his best. He has a bit of a wit and sense of  humor but doesn't take it over the top so I agree. A younger obnoxious loud mouth Dante (DMC 3) wouldn't have meshed with Nocturne that well.

I actually liked the humor in Covenant. A lot of people that enjoyed the first game focused just on the  slap stick and criticized the whole game for that sole  aspect though the rest of the actual story-line had grim, tragic, and very mature themes like the first one. Oh well everyone has different tastes and what not. lol.

Title: Re: penny arcade persona 3 comic
Post by: Himuro on August 11, 2007, 10:07:53 PM
I liked the first game for the horror aspects. The sequel's use of comedy was annoying, imo. I couldn't connect with the characters and didn't like them at all. Once Joachim was introduced, I knew the game wasn't for me. I like some slap stick and comedy, but Covenant was bordering on overly silly for my tastes, which was disappointing, because I really wanted to like it.

That and the one screen towns, boring dungeons, or gay jokes really didn't sit too well with me. I'd like to give it another go, but I fear I'll get the same result.

Title: Re: penny arcade persona 3 comic
Post by: nightsavior on August 11, 2007, 10:12:54 PM
Joachim wasn't exactly a fan favorite of mine either. I used Blanca a lot more. I understand your angst concerning the gay jokes. It's as if they made the  assumption there are no gay gamers thus no one would be offended when in reality a few people likely got their feelings hurt over the subject matter. Quite careless  on their part.

Don't try it again simply because I voiced liking it if you don't want to. I don't like putting peer pressure on others to do things that are about as pleasant to them as swallowing nails would be.

(shrugs) There's no crime in disliking a game the majority are fond of. At least you brought up valid reasons why you didn't get into Covenant unlike rebellious idiots that say they hate something popular just to stand out.

Title: Re: penny arcade persona 3 comic
Post by: Himuro on August 12, 2007, 12:10:11 AM
Covenant isn't even that popular, is it? =/ It's relatively niche. If someone was to say it was overrated, they'd be dead wrong, since it's it's that highly touted among most gamers.

Title: Re: penny arcade persona 3 comic
Post by: nightsavior on August 12, 2007, 04:39:56 AM
Well it seems to be an unpopular game with a popular reputation if that makes sense. If you  can overlook the "gay tailors" , furry jokes,  and vampire wrestler spoofs there is a wonderful core story and memorable villains as well as a few unexpected plot twists. Also every female character has a very "kinky" and "sexy" alternate costume if you do  some of  the  side quests! Ok, the last one is unimportant but you get my point.

In Persona 3 I saw the  alternative maid costumes you can get for the female characters but they didn't look  any more striking or arousing then their normal clothes. That would be about the only pointless gripe I have towards P3. :king:

Title: Re: penny arcade persona 3 comic
Post by: Lycanthroat on August 12, 2007, 03:26:50 PM
Uh? The gay jokes were offensive to some people?! That's taking it too far  - I mean, it was a bloody joke and no one I know thought it was offensive. On the contrary, everyone I know who has played Covenant found it hilarious and I don't mean that in a laugh-at-gay-Joachim way, but in a wow-this-game-is-brave-enough-to-make-that-quip type way. The Man Festival was awesome.

Title: Re: penny arcade persona 3 comic
Post by: nightsavior on August 12, 2007, 05:39:43 PM
Really I don't know from a straight perspective if gays necessarily would find it offensive. It just  seems like the tailor brothers were a  blatant stereotype. Still considering most games don't even have gay characters I suppose it was a positive step forward so you brought up a good angle I didn't consider.

Title: Re: penny arcade persona 3 comic
Post by: Himuro on August 12, 2007, 07:30:38 PM
The gay jokes didn't offend me. I just thought they were totally out of place and too silly for my tastes. I'm shocked I didn't like SHC because I love FFX-2 and apart of the reason I love that game is the humor and the light heartedness.

Title: Re: penny arcade persona 3 comic
Post by: Tony on August 13, 2007, 09:19:39 AM
Oddly, I thought people might find it offensive too... Not people disgusted by homosexuality as much as those tired of the stereotype the game utilized that seems to appear in every other sitcom.  However, the one gay person I know who played the game seemed to not mind it. I wonder if it's more of a "finally, more gay characters in a game, so I'll take what I can get" kind of thing, though lol.

My main problem with SHC was not that it had a sense of humor, but that, at least to me, none of that humor was very funny. I felt like I was playing through a really bad anime, honestly. I played like 15 hours of it or something (maybe even more), but it all just turned me off entirely. I might give it another shot someday, it's still in my cabinet.

I think the tailer brothers are as much a French stereotype as homosexual. I still think they're hilarious and I'm glad one of them had a comeback in SH3. The "Biker lovers" were just taking the piss out of biker boy American stereotypes which was quite funny.
I think in a way Nautilus was trying to parody anime and other real life issues in Covenant. Whether they did that successfully or not is up to personal opinion. The humor didn't subtract from the experience for me then again I was more intrigued by Yuri's mistletoe curse given to him by Nickolai, his desperate quest to bring Alice back to life only to have her fade in front of him again, and the strange plot twist involving Karin. I also liked how they kept the villains coming. I thought Rasputin was the head hancho only to discover later he wasn't. I never saw Kato as being a bad guy. I knew he was bitter from the death of his true love but when I faced him at the end it kinda surprised me. He didn't  seem to be the type to want to destroy the universe. Then again he wanted to create a better reality I imagine in which  all the tragedies that befell him never happened. The fact you  could get two different endings didn't hurt either.
Sorry for any spoilers given but SH covenant has been out so long I assume most people have beaten it or know the general flow of what happened.
