So, wait, they're going to include the absolutely atrocious Persona 3 OST, but they refused to include an OST with Monster Kingdom: Jewel Summoner, which had, arguably, superior music?

Also, they shouldn't have included "Shin Megami Tensei" in the title. Long, unnecessary titles do not equal sales unless "Final Fantasy" is in it.

Thanks for the information! Now I can´t wait to buy Persona 3, with both the artbook and the OST. I guess this will be a good reason to save my money.

And about that sorry Heat! But like I say P3 is a good game, and with the Best comes the best!!!

Sadly they have been doing that with every game related to SMT,that comes over here. With Nocturne,I can understand...but adding SMT to Digital Devil Saga,Devil Summoner and now Persona 3.

...it is just getting annoying. But it can't be helped, they will probably continue to do this, regardless if it's annoying to us or not.

This was brought to Atlus NA's attention during the release of DDS, but they are just going to keep going with it.

Atlus USA is content with people feeling like complete fools when trying to buy their products. I don't know about you, but I find it embarrassing having to say "Shin Megami Tensei: [Insert Title]" 3 times before I'm asked to spell it out.

"What? Could you spell that... Is that all one word? We don't sell imports here.".

This is why I only buy their games online now.

I've had that done to me from before, when I was buying Nocturne for the first time,I think.

But I think most of the workers at Gamestop know what I'm talking about as of now, atleast I hope.I already preordered P3,and the only problem they had was just looking for the words "Persona 3",since Shin Megami Tensei was all they could find.

I didn't mind it with Shin Megami Tensei 3, since that's the actual title, but Atlus USA thinks they're creating some brand recognition by adding "Shin Megami Tensei" to every damn game they release, so you wind up with titles like "Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devil Saga" and "Shin Megami Tensei: Kuzunoha Raidou vs the Soulless Army". It's ridiculous.

It is a bit much, but from a marketing perspective it works. Unfortunately for them, the phrase isn't exactly English friendly.

I completely disagree about the soundtrack by the way, but to each their own. At the same time, it's obviously going to be truncated...

It's funny that they took this long to announce all of this. Someone brought to my attention a short time before I took the main site down (and I posted it) that EBGames and Gamestop have listed all of these items for weeks.

I agree, it's a nuisance. I understand the marketing perspective, but being such niche titles (in the US) to begin with, I doubt it has a huge factor in sales. For the sake of being official I added it to the post, but will never refer to DDS or Persona as SMT. If anything, I wouldn't have minded seeing Revelations: Persona 3, but that was dropped by the second title.

As for the soundtrack, what is it comparable to? P2's trance-like soundtrack was among my favorites.

I suppose I'd call it "experimental". It has techno moments, but it also has hip hop and other genres mixed in. People are probably going to love it or hate it. I'm in the former camp.

Title: Re: Persona 3 U.S. Press Release and Details
Post by: Enid on April 24, 2007, 11:12:03 PM
Yes it does have a type of hip-hop theme to it.
Even in the Reincarnation OST adds more words in the lyrics to the remixed songs from P3,that remind me of some rap songs.

I'm not really a fan of rap or hip-hop myself.

Yes they´re good ones, but another good one in my opinion is "Mass Desctruction" anyway! Does anyone of you here, have the lyrics for this song?

The former is just a mediocre arrange of the original Velvet Room theme, and the latter is just Memories of the City [the only decent song on the OST] with terrible vocals added in.

EBgames and Gamestop have it listed it coming out near the end of July, they were right about the artbook and soundtrack so the date might be accurate.

Officially it's Summer 2007

D: Sucks that we can't get the FES edition, but at least we're getting P3.

Still, why does it feel like buying this version of P3 won't be worth it anymore when there's an extended version?

Are you serious about the FES edition? And anyway I guess it will be worth buying this version of Persona 3, because in what other way we can play it? You need to see the positive side of the case!!!

And I will save some extra money to buy FES, even if I can only buy it in Japanese and can´t play it!!

Atlus USA has not had one official statement on FES, that's all I need to know.
It's sucks, but based on the impressions I've read FES is not really substantial piece of the Persona 3 experience.

I'm glad Atlus is going all out on the P3 goodies, I'm a bit fan of the tunes.

"All out on the P3 goodies"? Compared to all the extra/special crap Japan got for its release, we got boned. Hard.

Music CD, Art book? That's damn good for an NA release.

We never get any of the goodies Japan gets, which really sucks. But the artbook makes me happy.

I am just wondering how long Altus USA will wait till they finally reveal whether FES is coming or not.

I am sure they might be worried that announcing that FES won't be released will adversely effect P3's sales.

But if they wait to long then they could be adversely effecting Atlus' image as a whole.

I mean, if NISA can release 10 or 11 shitty games a year, why can't atlus bite the bullet on one expansion?  Atlus isn't huge, but its not like Atlus is anywhere near as small as it was 4 or 5 years ago.

Atlus USA hasn't officially said anything about FES being released in NA, but it should be blatantly obvious at this point that we are not getting it packaged with P3.

Yes, officially it's still undecided, but if anyone around here reads NeoGAF there is an Atlus employee who has given a lot of insight into the problem with localizing FES. He hasn't blatantly said it, but it doesn't sound like they have done anything with FES so it won't be in the initial release that's for sure.

Title: Re: Persona 3 U.S. Press Release and Details
Post by: Tony on April 27, 2007, 12:46:16 PM
I posted a news article on the subject, but perhaps it wasn't very clear that it was only in reference to it not being with the initial release.. I wouldn't say it will never come out, but sales of Persona 3 are clearly going to have to make it worth their time. It's not like DDS2 in that it's necessary to finish the story.

I was of some hope that it might be included (there has, after all, been an increase in announced games for the US from Atlus that are still in development in Japan), but it was a bit much. We're talking an add on that's almost as large as the original game. To localize both at once and put it out for $50 would certainly not be very lucrative for Atlus USA. Frankly, from a business perspective, it would be stupid to do.

I'm still going to ask them about it whenever I bother to get around to an interview.

If you ever interview Atlus USA, ask them why they hired such a mediocre "graphics" designer. Atlus USA localized games have some of the most terribly designed box designs and logos -- like something done by some 14-year-old who just learned how to use Photoshop, the only thing missing is the abuse of lens flare. A good example is the terrible Kuzunoha Raidou logo.

How come your the first person who has brought this up? I think a lot of people appreciate how use the original box art for the most part instead of butchering with the inclusion of CG models and such (see Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter, Valkyrie Profile 2).

The current Persona 3 box art logo just SUCKS though. I better be just a placeholder.

EDIT: On second thought, I do remember the Devil Summoner logo really sucking. They changed it up on the final box art though I believe.

Title: Re: Persona 3 U.S. Press Release and Details
Post by: Tony on April 28, 2007, 11:21:16 AM
They did change the Devil Summoner text, it was something else previously. That old text is actually still on their press site. What they wound up with is much better.

Persona 3's, at least what's on EBGames, right now, certainly isn't that spectacular. The background artwork itself is absolutely fine, but essentially they took the logo and added a red glow to it. That pentagram logo is totally superfluous and, if anything, should be made FAR smaller and stuck in the corner (if not ditched entirely). On a whole, it's all just too big.

I'm really not of the opinion that there are gamers out there that will see that pentagram logo and instantly want to buy Persona 3. These people mostly know about it already.

Honestly, though, in general (excluding this box art, in particular) their box arts haven't really been any worse than any other company out there.  I can spot the Photoshop filters too, but you can spot them (and other free fonts sometimes) on covers from many, many companies. I personally have no real problem with them most of the time, but again, this one is particularly bad lol. I don't personally agree that Devil Summoner's sucked (compared to what else is out there, especially), although you could argue that it's way too cluttered at the bottom due to all the branding attached.

In any case, EBGames and Gamestop are quick to label: "All images are Temporary and are not considered final artwork." Personally, I think there's a strong chance that these are going to change and are up there just to be up. People are more likely to pay attention to an item with an image attached. As little as some may like Atlus's previous artwork, I think it's pretty clear that this was a five minute edit.

Yeah, I'm not buying it for the box. It could be worse. I'm buying it to support the brand, so that hopefully we'll see more.

I may be the only person who brought it up here, but I'm not the only person who thinks this. I know several people who think Atlus USA games have shitty box designs. The fonts they use are terrible -- they're these really mediocre freeware fonts that the guy probably pulled off of DaFont.com after spending only 5 minutes looking. Look at the Shin Megami Tensei 3 box design and the Digital Devil Saga box designs, both have "SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI" stretched on top of the logo, and it looks like shit. I don't even think the guy is a graphics designer, but rather, probably some random Atlus USA staff member who happened to have Photoshop, so he volunteered. He's an amateur who doesn't know what the hell he's doing. Boxes should look good, because they're a representation of the game. It's like clothes. Most people want to wear things that look good -- it should be the same thing with box designs.

I agree with Heat and fearing more for the P3 box art after I saw the front page for the US version of the P3 website today:

http://www.atlus.com/persona3/

Oh dear god, I hope they're not seriously going to use the pink.

Title: Re: Persona 3 U.S. Press Release and Details
Post by: Tony on May 10, 2007, 12:04:54 PM
One thing I noticed was that the Disgaea box art's title actually used a free version of a font that was designed for the film Dark Crystal lol.

This pink is hideous, though. Like I said, I don't think Atlus's boxes in general are any worse than most of what's out there... but if they go this route, it's going to look just plain awful.

I mean, as it stands, they have at least three pretty damn nice pieces of artwork to use, the logo is available... this glow just isn't necessary.

I've heard July 27th, as well.

Also, I'm glad to see that the 'goodies' won't just be available through pre-order. I pre-ordered Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin just one day late and missed out on all the awesome stuff that came with it.

Also, I can't wait to get my hand on the OST. I loved Nocturne's and the DDS games' to death, up until they were stolen. I really need to replace them from Atlus.com one of these days, but I keep procrastinating.:frown:

So why Persona?

What a good box art, have Persona 3, now I can't wait. But I guess I will buy both Persona 3 and Persona 3 FES, even if I can't play it and is in Japanese.

What's the weather like up there in Atlus' ass?

That does look pretty hideous.  I guess all we can hope for now is a reversible cover.

My guess is that this box art is for the deluxe box that holds the actual game case (with the original art we saw earlier minus the pink shadowing hopefully), the artbook and CD. Or like Jones said, the cover is reversible.

I would suggest you keep your creepy forum-yaoi-slash fantasies to yourself.

And also, I can't think of any other pseudonyms to use, despite my trying numerous times over the past 3 years. Heat is the only thing that's stuck. So, unfortunately for you, I most likely won't be changing it anytime soon.

As for your comment about my not liking Megami Tensei games (I think the term "Megaten" is ridiculous); I like some. Not all. I'm not a blind follower of the series, I don't think every damn game that falls under the Megami Tensei umbrella is perfect.

I have always found this strange as well. It seems that the first avenue of recourse for a foreigner is to spew anti-usa sentiment.  If we were to do the same towards their country, we are considered close minded and naive.

We also happen to be the first country that is hounded for aid or help, either humanitarian or military, when something serious goes down. I can't say I agree with everything (or the majority of decisions currently) we do foreign policy wise, but I get tired of the image you and many others are projecting.

Junpei sounds like a Ninja Turtle -- but a Ninja Turtle is better than bland Japanese voice acting, so, whatever.

I'm not sure if I've already mentioned this in this thread but: Why the hell are they using goddamned Japanese suffixes in the English version? It sounds ridiculous, it looks ridiculous, and there's absolutely no reason for them to be in the English version of the game.

From what I have read about the localization via interviews and people playing partially localized review copies it seems like much of the games Japanese themed content is going to be left intact.

I guess the use of honorifics is just an extension of that policy.  Seems like a pointless decision, but if they think it will help sales I guess they should just roll with it.  Hopefully it isn't used every time a character says someones name, cause that would get old extremely fast.

This and possibly the Star Ocean 4 that's supposed to be coming out. I say possibly because IMO SO3 was a bit of a flop.

I have Star Ocean: Till the end of Time, and for me was a good cuality game, but in some cases, it was very hard to complete, and the game was packed with many extra things like other character costumes and the vs. mode.

They totally should've dubbed the theme song over using an English vocalist. You know, a vocalist that doesn't sound like nails on a chalkboard.

Atlus hasn't announced anything official, but the Gamestop date is 7/24/07 for North America, hopefully they won't delay it any further.

Atlus's press site lists the same date as Gamestop. July 24, 2007. Obviously it can change, but it is the official date as well.

I personally can't wait for this game since I saw the new trailer with some actual gameplay footage. I like the comic book styling and so far all the VA seems spot-on. Hope the same goes for the rest of the game. My first Persona! Gah.. -_-

Kind of odd if you think about it. You are excited, yet this Persona is radically different from the others. You can't really base your excitement on the previous installments.

Yes. I'm sure Persona 3 will be the first game of it's kind for many people. There are some fundamentals from the previous games though... setting is quiet reminiscent of the first game (and IS I imagine). Story is heavily focused around character development... Commu system seems like a really refined contact system... Yeah, I just hope it's not as half-baked as Devil Summoner.

Uh, no. Have you even played the first Persona game, or Innocent Sin? I'm guessing not.

I started the one of them because I tried to play it on my computer with a download but my sound card didn't support it so that's as far as I went. I mean, I've read the game scripts but yeah, I can't find the time or the game outside of amazon and eBay to actually play it. The games look fantastic but I've never got to them. I'm young, what can I say? One of these days, soon, I mean it. I guess I have to buy off the net.

I don't know how different Persona 3 will be from the others but I still think it looks like a fun game regardless of it's predecessors.

And I am a bit of a noob to some Atlus stuff but at least I'm willing to learn, just too busy at the moment. This summer I'll have all the time in the world. I like older games. *shrugs*

I've played all the stateside Persona games. Last time I checked, Persona only had one town and it did revolve around the life of highschool kids. City layout seem a bit similar too. I haven't played Innocent Sin, that's why I mentioned I "imagine" that it has some similarities.

For what I have seen, Innocent Sin, es very similar to Eternal Punishment, of course with some changes, but the battle system is the same. The only change I see in the battle system is the "contact system" because, you choose the topic you want the character to talk.

Does P# have a lot in the way of relationships with the other characters compared to the main? I mean, I'm sure it's nothing like SO2's ending and relationship system, but doesn't that have some merit in the Persona games?

Title: Re: Persona 3 U.S. Press Release and Details

The game practically revolves around your relationships with the other main characters from what I've understood about it.

In any case, I'm looking for questions for Atlus from users here. If you have anything you'd like to know about Persona 3 feel free to post it at http://www.digitaldevildb.com/bbs/showthread.php?p=3351#post3351

Same,of course my question would have to be about FES.

Also..I'm wondering about the japanese culture they kept in P3,like with how you address someone, with the whole,-chan,-san,etc.Just curious as to what the point of that is? Not saying,I dislike it or it's a stupid idea, but I would like to hear from them. Are they trying to bring in new fans to understand the japanese culture a little more? Is this targeted for those anime sub watching viewers?

I also remember in that article by Rpgamer, that they did have to edit out certain japanese jokes that the americans wouldn't understand...and that is understandable.

That's pretty much all I can think of,whether this does get answered or not,is alright by me.

http://www.siliconera.com/2007/07/06/summer-school-is-in-session-a-look-at-persona-3/#more-5287%20is%20a - preview by Spencer from siliconera. I was positively surprised by this fragment:
Quote
On nights that you don’t go to Tartarus you may get a phone call from one of your classmates to hang out on Sunday, the only day where you don’t have school. You can accept or reject invites, but if you turn someone down your social link may reverse and you have to repair the friendship. If you choose not to hang out with anyone you can spend Sunday playing Innocent Sin, a faux MMO with references to past Persona games. In Innocent Sin you will meet a friend who goes by Maya and build the Hermit Social Link. Very funny Atlus. Maya speaks in internet talk with smiley faces, misspelled words and slang like “lol”. I had to point this out because the localization of internet lingo and most of Persona is spot on. Persona 3 goes so far to include elements from dating sim games. You can take out girls like Yuko, the manager of the track team and Chihiro, the shy class treasurer. If you max out your stats you can even date fellow Persona users.

It's nice to read a preview that actually goes somewhat beyond the surface for once. So far a lot of these I could have gotten from reading the back of the box lol

Hey ardent MegaTen fans Spencer from Siliconera here. Thanks for the link back to the post also I just want to clarify that you don't "play" Innocent Sin. You watch as your character talks to Maya and build the Hermit Social Link. Still a neat addition and there were references to the Jokers and such. Also Maya helps gives the main character "Tatsuya" as his online name. I'm sure most of you get that reference!

But I guess is just wonderful that Persona 3 connects in some way with the other Persona games, so that means the relation is never losed. In other words Persona 3 is not a different story, and in this way it has some connection with the character from prevoius persona games. For me is just cool.

And of course it would be a cool mini game!
