The Storyline
A full synopsis will be added here in the future.
Data
The concept of "data" is an important thing to understand within the storyline of Digital Devil Saga's two parts. In the beginning of DDS2, an older Fred tells a reborn Gale/David that data is the smallest building block for all things. As science progressed, molecules, then atoms, then even smaller particles were discovered. Data is so basic that it is found in absolutely every thing, whether it is some thing tangible or some thing intangible.
This is of particular interest because it implies that there is no difference between "articificial" and "natural" data as far as the laws of the Universe are concerned. In terms of data, the AI models present in the Junkyard are no less real than the humans living on what we would consider the "real world". This explains a multitude of developments along the story, including how the AI models retain the thoughts of humans who have since died and how the AI models are able to exist in the real world in the first place.
DDS is heavily based on the Hindu belief system. This system's deities are all known as Avatars; essentially, they are all manifestations of one true god. This furthers the idea of "I am you, you are me" that is presented by Shroedinger at the end of the second game. These demons were essentially all versions of god and in turn so were the ones that they transformed from. The realization by Seraph that he/she is one with god and god is one with every thing is what lead to his/her enlightenment.
Environmentalism and the Value of Human Life
Among other concepts, DDS places a strong amount of emphasis on basic environmental issues. God's destruction of the Earth was caused by many factors, but Jenna and Couvier seem to belive one of the strongest was mankind's abuse of the blessings they had been given. Plants withered under these new conditions and life could not be sustained. As such, human life became more precious, as did the life of various types of flora.
The interesting contrast to this was the fact that in order to remain living above ground essentially involved the necessity of demonic transformation. Retaining life as a demon obviously requires the devouring of others. In order to be able to eat your kind you essentially have to lower the value of the lives of others. Some are able to do this far more easily than others. The construction of the food rendering plant, (ala Soylent Green) is something that helps distance that idea from the mind of those that must feed, making the food seem less like another human and more like just another piece of meat.
