Against my better judgment I spent the better half of the afternoon fussing with this site. I'd promised myself a day to myself, but one thing led to another, the way programming is want to...

The good news the website is beginning to come together. I implemented a lot of important stuff this afternoon I look forward to going into another day. Right now I'm beat and ready to lick my wounds and turn in goodnight

Long story short (for now) ...there is a way to start migrating pages from Tony's legacy filetree into the new site. Check this out:

http://www.digitaldevildb.com/games/revelations-persona/

This is a pretty impressive hack. Because there is no way for contributors or authors to make "pages". What I've done is setup a system where a contributor can make a post, then when it's ready to be published, an empty page to match it is made, and the contents of the post are pulled into the page. Normally afaik only administrators can make pages. And it's probably best to keep it that way. So this is a happy medium without putting too much demand on the admin.

I've also put a lot of work into making the pages navigatable via the sidebar. None of this stuff is really a feature of Wordpress, so it all has to be hacked in / pulled together from plugins (with more hacks for glue)

It isn't ideal, but I figure as long as the core of the site is built around Wordpress, it's better to massage Wordpress than try to integrate Wordpress into the site (that apparently caused a lot issues for Tony which were still unresolved)

Finally, the generally "bad" news, is Tony's site overlaps the Wordpress virtual filetree. For example if you go to the front page and click on the Games page in the sidebar, you'll end up in the old site. So bottom line is the old site is gonna have to be shoved aside very soon. Probably to http://www.digitaldevildb.com/tony/

In the meantime volunteers are going to have to copy the inner content from Tony's pages into Wordpress posts. Like what I did with the Revelations: Persona page. It's pretty much a straight copy, except you also need to check all the links to make sure they still go to the right places.

The page posts have the same name as the page, only with " Page" tacked onto the end. The pages are private posts, so they don't show up in the regular news. If the name is wrong they won't be pulled into the page. Also it isn't enough to change the post name if you gotta... you also need to edit the "slug" underneath the name (the link where the page resides)

The whole site will have to be transferred over. So if you haven't volunteered to help yet, then it's time you step up. Everyone who volunteers will get Wordpress contributor privileges.

Goodnight goodnight

PS: The pages under the "The Database" heading will eventually only be one level deep like the "Classified News" heading... I just haven't gotten around to replicating that hack.

Unfortunately Tony had the habit of often using absolute urls (intermixed with relative ones) ...so this is going to get pretty ugly.

I'm going to backup the website, then move everything under http://www.digitaldevildb.com/tony/ over the next few days.

I'm going to have to remove all the references to the old materials from the site at large however. Because all of the absolute urls will basically be broken by this move.

I'll try to repair the broken urls as members add articles to the Wordpress database (it will be easier from there) then copy the fixed relative urls back into the old articles.

We're going to seriously need help with this. Everyone who uses/appreciates the site should volunteer to help! Otherwise the site is just going to be half there for a long time until people start helping sweatdrop

I setup a system for missing pages:

http://www.digitaldevildb.com/games/shin-megami-tensei-nocturne/

When I can I'll add more to the missing page so people can get an idea of how to fix it.

I'll go ahead and setup the page tree over time. But it will be up to the Contributors to fix them.

If you could provide maybe a step-by-step on how one would go about doing this?  Wordpress isn't exactly self-explanatory.  frown

I've explained it before pretty word for word. We're not using Wordpress so much. I've just tied together a hack, so I can make a page and have it pull it's content out of a post. Write now the hack is pretty shallow, but there's a lot I can do with it in the future.

Basically all you gotta do is go to a Tony page. Right click on it, and pick "view source" or some such. Then copy all the html from the pages body (some browsers will let you highlight part of the page and just see that parts source -- I recommend you use that)

Then just make a page. Name it the same as the title at the top of the page... but with " Page" on the end. Then edit the pages permalink so it's the same as the old pages url (this won't be possible in some sections, but do your best and I will fix it for now) then add -page to the end. Set the page to private if you can, and put it just in the Pagetree category. Then leave the rest to me.

Also you should try to fix the urls if there are any and they're broken. For now use absolute urls in the body, but leave off "http://www.digitaldevildb.com". So internal urls should just start with a root slash /.

Just to be sure everyone is on the same page... until these pages are all moved into the database, there won't be any thinking about anything like the demonary (game databases) or lexicon (encyclopedia) or any future special features.

There's no reason to plow forward until everything is back as it was.

I'm trying this out with the Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne "Tony" page and needless to say I'm still utterly baffled.  I've left the body but when I preview the banner is still showing up along with all sorts of broken html in the bottom...?

Plus I can't "make pages" unless you mean by posting to the Word Press.  I don't have the privileges to edit a posts permalink past "archives/uncategorized/2008/10/".

You can't make pages because that would be too confusing. After I install a roll manager plugin (so you can upload media) I could probably let you make pages, though I'm not positive they go through the same review/publish mechanism. But I'm not going to, because I want a post for every page. That way if a page is being edited, you can just work on the post, and the page will still look like it did before the post is reapproved.

Your errors are because you've copied all of the html after the page contents into your post rolleyes

Also your name is wrong obviously.

I'm only gonna teach this process like this to one user. You'll have to teach the next sweatdrop

It should be "Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne Page", though the page name isn't as important as the permalink. If you can't edit the permalink, I will.

All I copied & pastied was what fell between <body> and </body>.  face15

Anyway, after looking back on it after saving there's all sorts of new html in it now...

You'll definitely have to edit the permalink btw.

Sorry, if I'd meant the html <body> element I would've said so. I meant the main body text of the page. The "body" of an html page is everything visible on the page, so obviously that isn't what we want sweatdrop

真・女神転生lll-NOCTURNE マニアクス (Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniax)

Japanese Release: January 29, 2004
Japanese Release of Original Version: February 20, 2003
Retail Price: ¥6,090
US Release: October 12, 2004

Retail Price: $49.99
European/Australian Release: July 1, 2005
Retail Prices: £29.99;

€45; $79.97 AUD

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne for the Playstation 2 was originally released to Japanese audiences on February 20th, 2003 in both a standard and deluxe version (which went for ¥12,800 and included some bonus items). It was the first true addition to the main series since the original Super Famicom release of Shin Megami Tensei II on March 18th, 1994. As such, one can understand the magnitude of releasing a full-on sequel for a series almost ten years later. SMTIII: Nocturne was highly anticipated and met with good sales upon its release.

Around this time, fans noted that Atlus USA, Inc. was oddly quiet about the title. Nothing was announced about the game’s release and it was assumed the title was simply being passed over for other, smaller (and logically, easier to localize) titles. Time came and went.

Atlus Co, Ltd. eventually announced a second version of SMTIII: Nocturne; a "Director’s Cut" of sorts. It would be referered to as the "Maniax" version and feature a slew of new additions and adjustments. These included such things as:

    * General game balance adjustments (lowered ambush attacks, lower instant death rates, etc.)
    * Selectable difficulty level from the on-set (Normal or Hard)
    * The addition of the Labyrinth of Amala and, hence, the addition of the Fiends
    * A new "true demon" ending
    * Pierce was added as a new skill
    * A new opening movie

The addition that gained the most attention, however, was Dante of Capcom’s Devil May Cry series. The story goes that the developers enjoyed the game and character enough to add him into the "Maniax" version, initially without Capcom’s approval. Upon showing the game to Capcom, they liked what Atlus had done and approved of the use of Dante. Dante acts as more than a simple cameo, although at the same time he isn’t given a full-on treatment that rivals other main characters in the title. He is, however, a nice addition to the story, well utilized and true to his existing personality. Since the release of the title, Atlus’s Kazuma Kaneko became the designer of Dante’s new demonic form in the critically acclaimed Devil May Cry 3.

Atlus USA, Inc. remained silent on this version for quite some time as well. However, they finally announced plans to release the "Maniax" version of the title in the United States. Due to the fact that none of the titles had been released here before the number was removed from the title and the game was released as simply Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, dropping both the "III" and "Maniax" from the title.

Finally confirming rumors, European and Australian audiences got their first shot at the game on July 1st, 2005. It was released under an agreement between Atlus, Ghostlight Interactive and Ubisoft. In order to be accessible, the game has a new selectable language option. Unfortunately, some players have reported that the translation into other languages is not at the same quality standards the English translation had set.

As far as the game itself goes, Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne was the first time the main series attempted a third-person viewpoint while within the dungeons. The ones that preceded it all utilized first-person dungeon segments. The overhead map view makes a return, although this time around it is far more detailed.

Battles have also been adjusted and are far more streamlined. Nocturne marks the first appearance of the Press Turn battle system, which was also utilized within Digital Devil Saga. Rather than the simple "hit or miss" system of most RPGs (including the first two Shin Megami Tensei titles), the game rewards or punishes you for good or poor actions in battles. Your team has one Press Turn icon per character and any action uses one of these. Taking advantage of an enemy’s weakness or getting in an especially strong hit uses half of a Press Turn icon instead of a full one. This half icon can be used as though it was a full icon, effectively lengthening your attack time. However, if you miss or the character is strong to your attack an additional Press Turn icon will be wasted. This will be multiplied by how many characters the spell or attack affects, which means a single bad choice can waste your entire turn.

As far as influences, Nocturne, much like the ones preceding it, most heavily focuses on an altered Judeo-Christian belief style and a single main Creator God. However, like the games before it, lesser gods and demons of various other mythologies do make appearances of varying importance. The story itself focuses on the destruction of the world and its subsequent rebuilding. The protagonist’s decisions along the course of the game affect the world’s path and outcome. This dynamic required the existance of a few completely different endings, all of which are reached by taking different paths in the game.

You'll need to transfer the html in that part of the page source of course.

It's kind of hard to pick out what's what in a jumble of html.  rolleyes  WTF else am I supposed to think when you say "copy all the html" of the "body?"  Not exactly implicit nomenclature.

It looks okay in the preview so I guess it's up to you now to change the permalink. goodnight

I'm sorry, I probably have a hard time getting into the head of someone that doesn't know what they're doing. Once you figure everything out you should draw on that remembered confusion to help guide others along the way razz
