Title: Digital Devil Saga 2?
Post by: Argilla on August 22, 2005, 03:01:32 AM
Is anyone as excited as I am? :) The game comes out sometime next month! I'm not sure about the exact date because Atlus USA tends to change it a lot but I guess this gives us a chance to go through another play-through of DDS to get all the goods we missed?

Anyway, if you check out RPGamer (http://www.rpgamer.com)'s DDS2 section, they have quite a few English screenshots as well as movies. (Did I forget the high-quality art?^^)

DDS2 can't come soon enough :D I can't wait for the resolution to such an interesting game :lurk: ! I need to see me some more Serph and Heat and Sera, and the mysteries of Angel and Gale revealed!

Not really. Though, I've yet to beat the first one (not surprising). Have they released a DDS2 OST, yet?.

I'm really looking forward to it, probably moreso than any other game this year (although it may be tied with Dragon Quest VIII heh).

The first one ends with such a cliffhanger that I really can't even expect to not play the sequel to understand anything. It literally just ends and then the credits pop up. I want to know what the hell actually happens to these people lol. Of course, some things have been kind of spoiled for me over time thanks to working on things, but I still don't know a lot of it.

I took video of the ending that I'm putting up on Digital Devil Database soon. I figure there will be someone who wants to play the sequel that just didn't have time (or doesn't want to or whatever else) to finish the original.

I do wish they'd announce a date beyond "Fall" already, though.

I'm looking forward to it too! The ending was rather confusing for me in the Jap version, and I couldn't always understand everything I read... plus, it's always exciting to hear them talk in English. ^^

If anyone cares, GameSpy (http://ps2.gamespy.com/playstation-2/shin-megami-tensei-digital-devil-saga-2/644481p1.html) has a new DDS2 preview up. Though...

Quote
"Time-tested" is a nice way of saying archaic; Atlus has hit us with too many similar RPGs too often.

I can't believe they're whining about this. Square does it, and their games aren't even half as good. Though, it's GameSpy, so, yeah. They're as bad as IGN.

I'm replaying DDS1 again in anticipation of this title. This is probably my most anticipated game at the moment, though that's mostly because Final Fantasy XII was delayed until whenever next year.

Now that they're owned by IGN, there's seemingly even less difference then in the past. I don't pay much attention to specific  reviews at all anymore... Gamespy and IGN in particular just do not share my opinions on RPGs in general. I actually was talking about this on Gaming-Age's Forums awhile back and the guy running IGNPS2 basically said that no one in his section even cares for the genre all that much... how much stock can I put in them then?

I think it's a ridiculous complaint, honestly. The similarities are, as you said, no stronger than the ones between Square titles or the upcoming Shadow Hearts games and on and on. Final Fantasy has become almost sacred on major sites and magazines, probably to avoid bitching from its rabid fans. You rarely see a single complaint launched no matter how the translation is, how interesting the battle system is or how the characters are. If they just like them then whatever, but it's still weird to see complaints launched at games like DDS and SMT that could be likewise launched against games they rave over. What can you do, though?

SMT:N and DDS are honestly rather similar in basic construction... the dungeons and battle system, for example. Personally, I like dungeons and I think the battle system is fun and rewarding considering it's turn-based (which is more than I can say for most RPGs today). Even from the bits I've read of DDS2, it's obvious that a lot of things were fixed or improved or replaced that would benefit the title. You'd think story and characters would count in this case, but I guess not.

Still, three games over the course of a year and half that share some basic mechanics isn't making me upset lol.

I take reviews quite differently than they were (probably) intended. I normally don't really look at the complaints and things like that. I just look at how they describe the game itself, then I think to myself whether I would like that or not. Like, that statement up there, I'd have probably thought of that as at least a slight plus, because I'd be thinking, "Well, I like DDS, and they say this is similar, so I'll like this." As another example, a lot of reviews had complaints about Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter's system of doing things. I didn't take those as minuses, though, as I thought "Hey, I'd actually like a game that does that."

The bottom line: A good review describes the game rather than either praising or complaining about it.

True, true.

I don't listen to reviews, a lot of times they can be very misleading.  I used to go by a lot of reviews in the past, but soon found out that some of the games that got bad scores were actually very good.
----

I'm also very eager for the release of DDS2, almost nearing the end of DDS1's first play through.  Though I'm probably going to go through a 2nd one and try to beat Demi Fiend, I still can't wait for it :(.

Have you already finished off all the other optional bosses?

No I haven't yet.  I'm planning to put a big dent in the optional bosses today.  I was thinking of just forgetting them, but noticing that all the demons are really strong at the end of the game, so it might be good to get a ton of Macca and Karma.

EDIT: LOL, I got owned by Beezlebub (human form), this is going to be tougher than I thought.  Yes, I know I'm weak, all my characters are level 40-45. :D  (For some reason, in MegaTen games, I tend to be underleveled most of the time.)

Well when I went to preorder DDS2 today I read that when you preorder at some stores they will have the soundtrack. I didn't get it but I guess I'll wait until I get it. Maybe they will have it then.

I finally got around to preordering it at the local EB. She said that I should be getting a soundtrack with it, but she wasn't 100% sure. *crosses fingers*

I'm going to have to pre-order it soon. I definitely want the soundtrack the most because it's something that the Japanese version never got. Well, there was no second volume to begin with anyway. What a shame really...the music is really good in the sequel. D:

You're telling me.  I was listening to the Battle Theme and the Last Battle Theme from DDS2.  I want to listen to them in a much better quality though D:.

EDIT: I can't wait to see all the battle actiony goodness DDS2 has to offer, the battle theme makes me wonder how much better it will be.

DDS2 has one of the best battle themes since the normal SMT1 battle theme. I hope the DDS2 Soundtrack will have "Alive".

The other thing about this Gamespy preview that leaves me wondering is the claim "you can play through this game without ever playing the first and still be fine."  I heard something similar to Persona 2: Eternal Punishment when I picked it up.  Maybe I was able to finish it and enjoy it, but by the end I was still wishing for a translated copy of Innocent Sin.

But as for looking forward to the game?
Ohoho…It's a bit hard to describe how anxious I've been; I've almost reached the point where I'm frantically running around in circles waiting for new media or a release date.
I don't think that I'll reach the point where I'll cut classes to pick up my copy, but I will try and grab it the day it comes out.  After that cliff hanger of an ending for the first one, I've been pretty impatient for the sequel.  ((Second and possibly third play throughs do not suffice!))

After finishing DDS, I don't know. Honestly, you get to know the characters and see a few situations and the backstory, but very little happens in it overall to what I'm told is coming up in DDS2. Despite spending many hours on that game, I could probably summarize most of it very quickly. It seems almost like a prologue to a major story than a prequel... Innocent Sin, by comparison, was a full on game that existed as its own entity before any sequel was even considered. But again, I'm only just reading these things. I've not played it lol.

Title: Re: Digital Devil Saga 2?
Post by: Argilla on September 01, 2005, 01:25:05 PM
Well, that's because you don't need to play DDS1 to get an understanding of DDS2.^^; It's like Tony said, it's a prologue to the game. An introduction to the characters. You're not really missing out on anything really(story-wise). In DDS2, a lot of stuff from part 1 is explained in the first half of the game. I really do recommend people to play the first one though because you'll be missing out on a lot extra goods. D:

As for Innocent Sin, I see them both as two different games. I haven't finish IS nor do I want to(Radiokill wants it so I'm sending it to her ;D). Both games have different characters, a few different shops, and they *somewhat* don't lead the same way in their stories. They sort of do yet at the same time, they don't. Overall, I think IS wins at being the best game in it's series.

It's just that disregarding one game in a series, even if it is just prologue...It irks me, and quite badly.  I don't like the idea of playing through something, or reading a book series that are directly related to each other without going in order.
Maybe I'm just being overly sensitive/obbsessive compulsive about this?  ((Then again, considering how DDS seems to be nigh impossible to find right now, maybe it's a good thing that it isn't considered essential.))

Title: Re: Digital Devil Saga 2?
Post by: Argilla on September 01, 2005, 08:55:32 PM
No, I don't think your being overly sensitive about the subject.^^ To be honest, it'd be nice that people play out the first one to get a sense of what'll be going on in the second one. Also makes it easy for you to already know how the battle system works since it's basically the same thing in the next game.

Heh, I've been considering ditching classes just to pick up this game.  I just don't want to see this game slip through my fingers like Nocturne and Persona 2 did.  If it wasnt' for Atlus making limited copies, I might not think of this.  I'm REALLY anxious for this game.  I almost know how those Halo 2 fans felt when it was coming out and some of my classmates were actually skipping school JUST to buy it and play it the first day it came out.

I always wondered how IS played out, some people said it was the first half of the game...though by the script that someone had hosted, it didn't sound like that.  So I'm very confused about it; I probably don't have to worry, though.

Heh, I'm getting a bit anxious typing this up right now.  The release date is getting ever so close (13th for US shores, correct?), it's like waiting for Golden Sun 2 all over again, except you can't get it a week or two earlier by the way of emulation. XD

Isn't that the price for most games nowadays?  At least it isn't nearly $60 as DDS was, then again it was in a "deluxe box set".

I've seen a few games go for a lot cheaper -- around $40 (Dark Cloud 2 and the first .hack did, I believe). Don't know -- I just think that since they charged us $54 for DDS1, they could've tried to make DDS2 cheaper.

I think some people should be glad about the US release prices. I don't think anyone should be complaining because here in Japan, a lot of video games cost from $60 to $80! Now THAT is expensive compared to what everyone in the US has to pay. And those prices also go for 'regular' editions as well.

I know of Japan's prices. But, I still feel pretty good complaining about the prices here. Oh well.

I have a question -- do I have to pre-order DDS2 from any certain site to get the OST? I checked EBGames, but they don't make any mention of the OST, whilst GameStop does mention the OST, but only if you pre-order. Thing is, I hate GameStop -- so, I'm not sure if ordering from EBGames will get me the OST or not.

Did you ask them about it?  I think I remember EBGames saying that you will get a bonus CD if you preorder it (on their site maybe?) just ask at the counter or something.

I never went to EBGames so I wouldn't know.

The U.S. DDS2 website is up: http://www.atlus.com/dds2/

It's pretty ugly (as with every Atlus USA) site, and has obnoxious looping music (that you apparently can't turn off). It has wallpaper and some MP3s (nothing of interest -- Although, Betrayal is cool), though. I can't believe they really went through with re-naming Roald.

RPGFan says "Digital Devil Saga 2 is currently slated for an October release and will be rated M for Mature by the ESRB." -- I thought it was going to be released on September 28th?

Yeah, Gamestop and GameFAQs still says September and they are pretty reliable.  Never been to RPGFan so I don't know how they are with their dates.  My only suggestion is that they just "rounded" to October, taking it's only 3 days away...

I thought that change was good for Roald, I kept calling him Roland. :P

RPGFan sucks -- I only go there because the URL is short. And, I hate the name "Roland" -- it reminds me of the company that makes Music things. Plus, Roald reminds me of the author (Roald Dahl) -- I think overall, Roald sounds a lot more unique and cooler. Though, I remember someone had stated his name would be "Ronald" -- I'm glad they didn't go with that.

I don't get it at all, why did they not release 'innocent sin' for in the U.S but went ahead and released 'revelations' ? IMO as far as the 'persona series is concerned if they update the graphics, translate(persona:i.s),uncensor (persona 2 ep I'm talkin' to ya'),box set them and release on the ps2 or 3 whichever one doesn't maater because I'm getting the ps3 anyway. Then I'll be happy. It's a good serues and I'd like to have seen the WHOLE story not just from a then skip to z the rest of it too.

It's not up to Atlus %100 what games get released here -- It's up to Sony -- hence, why we didn't get Soul Hackers, either. The content in Innocent Sin was probably considered too objectional at the time to be released here. They're not going to re-make either of the Persona 2 games -- there's no point. Be glad that we at least got Eternal Punishment. Eternal Punishment doesn't need Innocent Sin for the game to be played. We're never going to get Innocent Sin, so, people should just quit whining about it.

Because I'm one crazy bitch and DDS just happens to be my most favorite game, I'm so saving up to get the Korean box set: http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-43-77-2-15-digital%2Bdevil%2Bsaga-70-z2r.html Just from reading the contents...T_T; It comes with DDS1 AND 2. I think you also have to remember that the original Persona (I assume you mean that game by "Revelations" and not the Game Boy Color title) came out like four years before the Persona 2 titles hit the US. It was essentially one of the earliest Playstation RPGs to be released here.

As for that Korean version... cool, but I'd never use any of that stuff lol.

However, the ending of its prodecesor was quite puzzling and left me hanging, forming my own conclusions. So, I am avidly waiting for an early release as well.

I'm slowly but surely getting over my running-around-in-hyperactive-circles phase, and settling into counting down the days on the calender, and grinning like a moron while doing so.

October is a good month to release DDS2 in.  A very good month.  So good that it would not be feasible for Atlus to push the game back to a different month, thus spoiling the set up.  Therefore, they will *NOT* push the game back, and keep the shipping date to where it is.
Yessssssss.

This is more DDS1 related, but I've got to ask... I noticed while looking at the Mantra list that there's one called "Wikipedia". Is that in reference to the site, or is there something behind that name that I don't know?

I too wondered about this. After looking around, there seemingly was no basis for it in mythology or otherwise. Wikipedia gets its name from the combination of "wiki" and "encylopedia"... where Wiki is just a web application. The name "wiki" according to Wikipedia  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki)comes from "Cunningham coined the term wiki after the "wiki wiki" or "quick" shuttle buses at Honolulu Airport."

So, from all I can figure out, it's either just randomly named or actually based upon the Wikipedia website. It's entirely possible considering how popular it is the world over.

Apparently, in the Japanese version, it was called "Kunitsukami" (国津神) [I think] -- So, I guess since it was changed there's a high probability that it was named after Wikipedia. Weird.

I'd like to think that it's named after the online encyclopedia, instead of some random term that sounded good.

It's already been explained. There is no (as far as I know) "official" reason. I assume it's due to content or SCEA being pricks and declining it (like they did Soul Hackers). Eternal Punishment had a lot less content that could be considered "offensive", I guess. That, and wouldn't it be kind off odd trying to localize things like the MUSES scenes? And some of the Lisa-related things. A running joke is that Lisa doesn't know English, yet a lot of people in the game assume she does, I guess some of that would be lost in a translation? I'm not the best person when it comes to thinking up "theories".

I don't have a clue. It doesn't really matter much to me as I've already played it, and I'm sure there won't be a localization, and thus, no reason to dwell on it. Be glad we got Be Your True Mind and Eternal Punishment, at least.

I think people need to get over the fact that it's not coming to the states. But who knows what Atlus Japan might do. They might release it for PSP giving it a chance stateside.

*coughs* Did anyone pick up their DDS2 soundtrack? *didn't* Well, I can't really.

I hear there'll be another one but hopefully it'll be cheap. D:

I think some places were supposed to be giving it at stores here when you pre-ordered, but most of them seem to be waiting till you pick it up. Mine should come in the mail with the game.

Although I'm sure it won't be the full soundtrack... unless Argilla is referring to something else entirely.

It'll, apparently, only be half. You'll have to buy the other half off of Atlus' website.

I just got my copy in from FedEx. Gamestop didn't include the CD as they said they would... it's even on my shipping list. I e-mailed the site. I guess I'll see what happens.

The game's boxart is different than I expected... it's the image of all the demons in the city that was shown on Atlus's site as the soundtrack cover. Color booklet :D

Looking forward to playing it later when I have time.

I don't know how this works, but, from what I've heard... If you send Atlus your receipt, they'll send you the OST. Might want to look into that on the Atlus Forums or something, if you didn't get the OST. Though, I could've misheard.

I bought the game today, and they even gave me the soundtrack (And I was also the only one who reserved it in my area).

I'll play DDS2 in a few moments, I can't wait.

Anyway, after playing it for a few hours I can safely say this game was well worth the wait, I have been enjoying it so far, some of the new things include Karma rings you can equip on your characters, even though one karma ring can be equiped at the time for each character at least you can customize them by using jewels like Sapphires, and Diamonds to give your rings special bonuses. The Berserk mode is also good, while I don't like the loss of accuracy, at least you can strike critical bonuses with each succesful hit, too bad you can't use magic in Berserk mode, but you get double the Karma points after battle.

In the first game there were cells you can exchange for cash, now there are "Plants" instead, but unlike the cells, the price for selling plants doesn't seem to change with the Solar Cycle.

Good story, too. Even early in the game the story gets very interesting. :smug:

I picked it up today, (yay!) but they didn't give me a soundtrack. (boo!)

According to the Gamefaqs message boards the cover is reversable, on the other side is the cover with Sara and her Demon form that I was expecting.

EDIT: I just checked, and yes, the cover is reversable.

Yeah,a friend of mine didnt get his OST either. But yes,the whole send your receipt in to Atlus is true.

I got my OST on the day I preordered it,which was at Game Stop last week.
Just got the game today.

I find it very interesting they put more personality into the characters this time.I'm referring to the level up screen.

"Serph trips on something" and you find it's a item. Or "Gale searches the area and finds an object". Something along those lines.

The one I find hiliarious and sick,is the one with throwing up items.

"Serph's stomach hurts.
....he must have eaten something bad.
Found 1 Revival Bead.

Serph regurgitates the Revival Bead."

Sick yet,funny,lol.

There's really not much to say aside from "avoid him". He will only start running at you if you're both on a pathway that's directly connected, otherwise he'll just walk around. However, he'll walk in your general direction no matter what. The best thing to do is to lead him slowly away from where you're trying to get to.

When he has those traps set, you're probably best off standing in front of them and waiting for them to disappear. It takes less time than being caught in them and trying to run out.

Personally, I've had better success just running all out and not worrying about getting caught in the traps.

The Japanese guide book actually has maps to where it shows you the best places to run rather then running around in circles trying to avoid him...^^; If any of you guys need them, I can take pictures of the maps for you. (But I'm pretty sure everyone is done with this part.)

Time has been so hard to come by lately. I didn't get ridiculously far in DDS2 (I'm at that green slime guy mentioned here earlier, if you can believe that lol) and once Dragon Quest VIII came out it pretty much ate up 100% of my game playing time. I start a fulltime web design job this next Thursday too, which is going to hurt it even more... Working on this site is becoming harder and harder, but I'm not going to give up on it. I kind of wish someone would fully commit to helping me with it for once :(.

I actually played this pretty heavily again a few days ago. I'm well past that boss and now I wonder why it was even a problem at all. The second time around it didn't seem remotely difficult. I guess sometimes you just need a break from these games.

Title: Re: Digital Devil Saga 2?
Post by: Tony on February 17, 2006, 11:40:15 AM
I've put some more time into this one and made it to
the Sun to deal with God first hand.
The cut scenes leading up to this were especially well done, I felt. I've not played a RPG in quite a while where I even cared about the lesser characters, not to mention the major ones. A lot of twists and turns along the way too. It's nice how so many things start falling into place as time goes on... it's funny how long it takes at times to really understand something because the game makes sure to remain vague about it early on. It's well beyond what's usually presented in console RPGs, in my opinion.

I hope to finish it soon. I'm kind of surprised at its short length, despite knowing ahead of time. I seem on track to finish this at a bit over twenty hours (not including restarts, obviously). Considering I'm at the end, I really have barely even begun to master the Mantra Grid.

I know there's some hidden stuff in the title (
and I didn't manage to get Heat either, although I prefer Roland honestly
), so that will take up some time. However, I can't help but feel that the game would have benefitted by even higher gains after battles. I don't know that I want to spend hours more on a title just to see and use the biggest attacks in the game; particularly when there is no real effect on the progression of the game.

Still, despite that, I've greatly enjoyed the title.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the game!^^

I'm a little upset to see has fast the game went by as well but there's also side quest to go through. I doubt I'll get to any in DDS2 though since I only defeated a few of the secret bosses in DDS1. I wish they could of made the side quest a little bit more fun. I don't know, boss fighting can get quite boring, imo.
