Title: It's page migration time again....
Post by: yksehtniycul on December 25, 2008, 07:27:27 PM
I have been slowly adding archive links to the Wordpress interface, but I reckon it would be a good idea to start migrating some of these pages. Especially ones directly under the top-level pages (the ones you can see in the side bar)

One reason I'd like to do this is so we can explicitly give Tony credit for his articles, but another reason is I've recently added comment functionality to every page, and in order for an article to be commented on, it has to be part of Wordpress and not the archive.

I was kinda hoping Ryland would get around to drawing up a tutorial, but I haven't heard from him for a while, and I'm not sure when he'll be back in action. He pledged to do a lot of work for the website, but on the other hand felt like he had a deadline for some of his comics work due to an opportunity that arose, which I imagine he must be focusing on. He also had a lot of Xmas business to attend to. At any rate, in the meantime... I'd like to see some pages go up regardless :rolleyes:

I don't expect anyone else to volunteer out of the blue, so basically I'm asking you Emilio to try to figure out Wordpress. Just a straight copy of pages (with all html intact) is all we need. I also expect Ryland to help whenever he shows up again. I want to move as many of the first level pages as possible (that is pretty much everything except the game detail pages)

Please help us make digitaldevildb.com a success :rainbow:

The comment system will also give us a temporary way to mitigate some of the info/stances in Tony's articles, and maybe add some extra info in the meantime.

Ok, a straigth copy of the html of all the pages, got it. And where do I save all the html? On a notepad or something like that?

We need you to save them in a Wordpress post. If you do it right, the post should look like the page. I'll take care of the rest... or let you know what you can do to help at some point :wink:

Save them in a Wordpress post, got it! Once I finish some stuff of my work I'll start working with that. :smug:

EDIT: All Tony's pages, right :confused:

Before I keep going, I need you to see the drafts and let me know if that's how you want the pages to be.  :wink:

It won't hurt if you go ahead and do them all, but for now I want to focus on the first-level pages. So not the screenshot and game details pages, for example, but most everything else is probably cool.

Ok, yes, let's slow down a bit until you're sure you're doing everything right. To begin with, you should click the "Preview this Post" button to make sure the page looks correct. You obviously can't put the entire page in the post, so you just want the actual article in the post. That is just the HTML below the page title, and to the end of the article.

It might be safe if you just delete the extra HTML at the top and bottom of your Wordpress posts. But Wordpress also has a tendency to remove what it considers redundant <br> and  <p> tags. So we have to be careful about that for now. So let's take things slow. I will try to undo that bad Wordpress behavior asap, probably tonight. I'll let you know when I do.

But before you go any further, let's focus on the Satan vs. Lucifer page, and try to get it right Ok :rainbow:

Also we can't use the Lexicon pages. Though I will make an archive link to Tony's Lexicon on the Encyclopedia page when I can get around to it.

I looked in to Wordpress' filtering business. Most of the pages you copied into posts seem to have been modified by Wordpress. However I can't find any filters that do this, so I'm assuming this was caused by the "rich editor", which I disabled in your user profile (I thought I had already disabled it -- at any rate, don't use it, especially not for page migration)

Everything copies over fine for me, and I can't make Wordpress bungle the post. I'm not sure if DevilRy still has problems with that or not. But for now just do your best.

There is no need to copy over very simple pages without any real content, ie. Tony's articles page etcetera. Also again I apologize if it wasn't obvious, but we can't use Tony's Lexicon pages that way. His Lexicon is stored in a database however, so I can easily import it, or temporarily display it somehow when I get a chance.

That said, all we need is the meat of the pages. The internet doesn't run on dreams and magic, use common sense. You can't just copy an entire webpage into a post and expect it to come out right!! Just copy in the unique content of the page with all of it's html intact.

Leave the title out, but name the post the same as the title. When you're done use the Preview Post button to make sure it looks correct. Make sure all of Tony's <p> and <br> tags are in place between paragraphs and such. Then once everything starts looking good, I'll take care of the rest for now. But after you figure it all out, I'll explain to you more stuff you can do to make my job easier ok :smokin:

Also, if you look on the website, we already have pages for some of Tony's pages, so obviously we don't need those pages re-migrated, so don't bother with them. Some of the pages Tony did himself actually, but apparently he never felt comfortable making the jump to Wordpress for non-blog stuffs.

I'm going to go ahead and do up the Lucifer vs. Satan post for you, so you can see what a correct post should look like...

See, now here is the page:

http://www.digitaldevildb.com/articles/lucifer-vs-satan-which-name-is-correct/

And you can find the corresponding post in your Wordpress interface.

I see!! Ok, I'll try to modify the pages right now and then again, ask for your opinion. Thanks. :wink:

I would not be able to do much today, but I modify the page of "Games", why don't you take a look and see if that's how you want it, ok? :biggrin:

It's better, but you don't need this bit:

Quote
<div>
<div class="narrowcolumn">
<div class="post">
<h2>Games Section Overview</h2>

or...

Quote
</div>
</div>
<div>
<ul>
   <li>
<h2>Sections</h2>
<ul>
   <li><a href="#us">US Releases</a></li>
   <li><a href="#euro">European Releases</a></li>
   <li><a href="#japan">Japanese Releases</a></li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>

<em>© Tony </em><em></em> <!-- TopBlogArea.com END --></div>
</div>

The "© Tony" stuff is generated by our Wordpress theme.

Also something you did stripped out the <p> tags, which we will need for the page post, even though everything looks ok (Wordpress automatically inserts it's own <p> tags for posts if they're absent)

I really wish Ry would write a tutorial for all of this. I don't understand why it's so complicated for people, but apparently a tutorial is needed. I can't explain this stuff to everyone.

Also we already have a Video Games page obviously, so we don't need that page. Though if you wanna practice on that post, that is ok.

It's not so complicated, but it's confusing to see all those tags  @.@

I'll practice with it. :wink:

We need the tags for the pages... I could run the content thru a filter, but I prefer the complete control over page content.

Btw, this wasn't much trouble:

http://www.digitaldevildb.com/lexicon/?letter=a

It's an ok place holder for now, but we can't add to it. Eventually we'll be going with a more scalable format.

Btw, if someone can round up all the letters in the current encyclopedia without any information I'd appreciate it. They should be greyed out so people don't waste their time clicking on them :sweatdrop:
