Title: Making your own Rpg?
Post by: nightsavior on September 09, 2007, 11:23:10 PM
Just wondering if anyone has thought of making their own rpg. With programs like RPG Maker available for download sometimes as cheap as 40.00-50.00 dollars it seems like it maybe a neat endeavor. There was even an RPGMaker on the PS2 that used next gen 3d graphics of course what sucks is unlike a pc version you cannot download additional character models, maps, creatures,or props. I used RPG Maker Xp awhile  ago that employed traditional 16-32 bit sprites and after I learned the basics it wasn't so bad. So has anybody attempted to make their own rpg or a megaten  rpg tribute using ruby script?

I´m working on a Persona project, with some friend of the forum, but the thing is going slow, cause I have been to busy. But yeah is cool, we are using some scripts to change the appearence of the menu, and we want to use another scripts for other things, such as a demonary and a different appearence for the battle.

Cool Emilio.  Hope  it works out. I've suffered from the same  problem...alot of ideas but not enough time.  I've done "rough sketches" of the characters and have the story but I still need to do the scripting and what not.

Hmmm....I've had alot of experience with the console RPG Makers. The PS1 RPG Maker was very enjoyable, and RPG Maker 2 looks like it could be very good. However, RPG Maker 3 was a steaming pile of....umm....need a euphemism....well, it was bad.

I thought RPG Maker 2000 for the PC was easier to understand than XP. Then again, I don't think XP had the same amount of material to start out with, like 2000 had.

To me, the best rpg maker on the computer is the 2003, because of the side view of the battle chars. But since the rpg maker xp, let you handle the scripts, it is a lot better, you can do a lot of different things with it.

Thanks, I hope I can continue with it soon.

I never really made fan-projects on RPG Maker. I tried to make original projects, make my own, working character sprites, etc. I did that fairly well, however, at the time I used RPG Maker, which was around 3 or 4 years ago, I did not know how to work the event programming language very well.

I tried making one way back when my brother had it. It didn't go too well, let's just say it was way too complicated for an 8 year old. I never really felt the urge to make an RPG since that extremly annoying experience.

Sure is complicated, but you can do a lot of good things with those programs, of course if you know how to use them.

Yeah, I guess. Maybe since I'm older now, I could actually understand it. But I don't really feel like using it, anyway I have other games that I want to play.

Yeah, I too have like 10 games that I want to play at the same time, and I don´t have any time to work on the rpg maker. You need to put a lot of time and dedication in it, if you want to have a good result, of course. And sometimes, you just need to have programing experience.

I've been tooling around with a Persona/DevilSummoner-style idea for a game for years, kind of like a North American version, taking place at Miskatonic University from the Lovecraft books.  Never messed around with RPG Maker but I've had friends who have.  Honestly I don't really have the free time to do it, but its definitely on the back burner as far as plans go.
