Title: So any anime watcher ?
Post by: RE_horror on March 09, 2007, 12:18:15 AM
Meh, just wondering...
Currently, I'm watching :Super Robot Wars OG Divine War, it's pretty good for a mecha and super robot fan likes me.
And Tokyo Majin, a persona/smt-ish anime based on a PS 1 Game.

There's always the edit option over double-posting, but I'm not sure if that's a rule here.

I'm into anime to an extent. I used to watch Dragonball religiously when I was little. lol

Right now I'm watching Eureka Seven and trying to finish Elfen Lied.

I think we all did at some point :) ... some twenty year olds I know still do.
I am an aniem watcher, and um... I'm currently in the middle of watching Wild Arms (it's pretty good, I wouldn't necessarily recommend it though.

Also, I'm responsible for uploading Tokyo Revelations onto Boxtorrents, so I'm pretty much proud of that.  combining all of my favourite thing, naturally.  Bootlegging, anime, and Shin Megami Tensei

Oh Sweet Cammy, I swear I will never double-posting again.:smug:
Beside, @Traci: Are you "Tracido" in Atlus MB ? Nice to meet you , BTW.

I don't think I am Tracido at atlus mb, because I don't know what atlus mb is (although I think it would be atlus message board?).   But that is really creepy because "do" are the first two letters of my last name o.o crap son. That's scary stuff.
Also it is nice to meet you too

There's no real double posting rules here as long as the new post offers something worthwhile. So don't just make a second post that could function perfectly fine as an edit. It drives me nuts when people rephrase their first post in a second post.

Personally, I can't really stand anime anymore. I used to be into it, but over time it because overly clear to me that so much of it is so similar and uninspired. It takes a lot for me to get interested in anything new. I generally am let down by the latest, popular series.

I have a huge soft spot for Macross/Robotech related work, though.

Are there any anime series that you still like and find original and inspiring?

Title: Re: So any anime watcher ?
Post by: traci on March 10, 2007, 01:05:44 AM
I know I sometimes feel that anime is losing it's edge, but moreso in the animation department.  A lot of series got really lazy with animation, just pan and zoom, pan and zoom.  And when people talk, we arn't going to bother moving their chin, only the cell with the mouth on it. (Noir *cough cough*)
That's why I usually try to stick to older stuff.

Title: Re: So any anime watcher ?
Post by: RE_horror on March 10, 2007, 04:52:25 AM
Ever try on D.Gray Man, Tokyo Majin ? They're dark animes and have some persona/smt-ish in it.

And personnally, I don't think anime's losing it's edge at all, One Piece, the New Getter Robo and all the new "dark animes" is still keeping me hooked. And now Dancouga Nova, if you excuse me, "mmmoooeeee", lol.:smug:

As a Asian myself, I grown up with Animes, when I was a kid, I enjoyed Sailor Moons along with Dragon Balls, Golion, read Astro Boy's manga. So that's why I loved anime so much. People can call me a Japanophile, but meh, with new animes to watch, why should I care ?:smug:

Anyway, @Traci: Yes, "atlus mb" is Atlus USA Message Board.

I had a really weird dream the other night that I had the entire series of Sailor Moon on my psp... that was weird.
Also, a good "dark anime" as you call them, would definitely be DevilLady, and Devilman OVA(to a certain extent).  But stay away from the Devil Man series, it's crazy old.  Like speed racer old.

Really? Interesting, so do I. I watch mainly older stuff -- mainly older mecha shows / space opera junk, but I am pretty particular in what I will watch. Votoms, Patlabor, Macross are some of my favorites.  I dig pretty much anything Miyazaki has done.  Berserk, NGE, GiS SAC, and Cowboy Bebop are some of the only shows that I have liked from the past 10-12 years.  I miss the more traditional animation methods. I am excited to hear that there is a new Votoms show in the works.

LOL.
Man, about the Dark Animes, I meant Tokyo Majin, D.Gray Man.
But we can also count Devil Lady  Devil Man OVA... and Demon Lord Dante, which have the basic story resembling SMT, but damn, I never watched that show so I can't recommend it through.

Kaki seems to be a "real robot" fan, assuming he like Macross and Votoms, but he didn't like Gundam, oh geez.
I'm a fan to Super Robot, like Getter or Mazinger shows with Hot Blood Pilot, monster and a lot of screaming:censored: .

That is because outside of their size or dimensions, most Gundam mecha shouldn't even fit into the realistic mecha mold.  The energy sword battles and most close combat in Gundam is ridiculous. Why do I have to like it anyway? I like ketchup and tomato soup, but dislike fresh tomatoes. Who cares?

Title: Re: So any anime watcher ?
Post by: Camanche on March 10, 2007, 08:33:02 PM
Can't say I could ever get into Gundam. I think Eureka Seven is the only mecha series I've watched for more than a few episodes. I've got to say I'm Miyazaki's fan too. I got into anime with that badly brought over version of Nausicaa back in the eighties. lol I've watched most of his stuff. Nothing beats Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke.

If you haven't already, you should check out the Nausicaa manga. I blows the movie out of the water.

Mecha is about sci-fi. What's wrong with a robot with a organic wing ? An Energy sword ? Energy scythe ? Or even a "God finger" in a sci-fi story ?
...meh, but if you said so. I did enjoy Macross Zero.
@Cammy: Ever watch Code Geass ? or Evangelion ?

I've never seen any mecha anime except a few Evangelion clips. I guess I just find it too outlandish sometimes. Never been into the giant robot thing. Been told to watch that series though.

Evangelion is interesting, and I really enjoy it, but I wouldn't stick it into the mecha genre for numerous reasons.

I really liked Pani Poni Dash and Azumanga Daioh.
They're both School Comedy Anime, full of crazyness like Excel Saga XD

I'm currently watching (and reading) D-gray Man, Death note and Naruto.

I find anime boring, and most of it is too full of the same clichés to be worth my time. I liked G-Force/Gatchaman and El Hazard [apparently, there are different versions of the latter, I don't recall which I saw]. I enjoyed what I saw of Sailor Moon, though, I never got to see any of the episodes that had the Outer planets, though, I wouldn't mind seeing those episodes.

I generally prefer to stay away from anime these days. I started watching "Welcome to the NHK!", and it seemed like it was going to be different, and it was rather amusing, but it turned into your typical "romantic comedy", so I stopped watching. I was really disappointed.

I was going to look into watching Devil Man, since apparently, there's some connections between it and Shin Megami Tensei if... (according to someone I know), but I never got around to it.

I saw Evangelion, and hated it. Shinji became such a horny little pervert near the end.

It's not like so, Shinji is a fucking lonely boy, man, he needs love, in the past he didn't have even a mother, and his father acted like a jerk. That's why he found compassion and love with Asuka. He's just too shy and emo to tell her the truth. Anyway I like Rei better. Maybe I have a crush with emo girl in general.

I fail to see how this justifies him being a horny pervert. He was a mediocre, annoying, poorly done character.

agreed it is hard to like Shinji Ikari's Character but I mean what is so well done about him is that his character is true to life.  A normal teenage boy is horny, lazy and full of excuses, I mean that is one thing that is exceptional about the series is that Shinji isn't some super character, and that he is a flawed person.
Granted he is really annoying at times.

.

Oh, also.  SMT + Devilman don't really have much in common other than that it is a half demon half human kickin' demon ass.  And the series follows the idea that each episode has a villian who the protagonist fights and then the series starts to develop around that(Like Spawn or Spiderman) Also the series of Devilman is old. Like Speed racer old and I've only found the series with ESL style dubs. But there was an OVA produced much later on that I though was quite good. (In all honesty I was playing Tetris at the time of watching it).  Also, although the concept of SMT and Devilman are quite different, if you do happen to enjoy it I would recommend DevilLady it is a bit slow to pick up but once it does it's so badass.

I believe he stated that the character of Akira from Shin Megami Tensei if... was a homage, to Akira from Devilman. They have the same names, Akira (Devilman) is possessed by Amon, and I believe Akira (if...) becomes Amon or something like that, I haven't played more than 10 minutes of Shin Megami Tensei if.... I know there's the Akira-Amon connection, but that's all I can say since I've neither seen/read Devilman or played too much of Shin Megami Tensei if....

Well, the EVA director Hidki Anno want to make Shinji be a flawed person after all. And he have a mental problem, too. Can't say he's a horny pervert, Anno just want to show us the true nature of a boy if he hasn't been raised correctly.

I must admit I hate Shinji sometimes, especially in EoE, but a poorly done character ? No way, look at Kira Yamato from Gundam Seed, a truely poorly done character with jesus attitude.

...well, because he's too shy to fap her when she's in normal condition...
That show his timid nature, shy and always fear.
And even in the last episode of EoE, he even tried to kill Asuka, maybe he wants to be alone in this goddamn world he created, "Disgusting"-the reply of Asuka give me the impression about the New World he created.
He isn't god , he's flawed boy but have the power of God, so the world he created is pretty much flawed too.

The creator of Evagelion was in therapy during the time he was writing the show. There he had a first hand education in psychology & was fascinated by the works of Lacan, Freud, & Jung.

In fact, psychoanaylitcal theory is more so the basis of the show then giant robots.

Many of the characters have deep psychological traumas resulting from their relationships with their parents & their childhood. Which of course forms their personalities, their social habits, their limitations, & the way they act in combat.

So their actions, both good & bad, are a direct link to their childhoods psychoanalytical theory such as Shinji's infamous masturbation scene.

A lot of people who were repulsed by the scene to the point of bewilderment dont understand the importance of psychoanayltical theory to the series.

What kind of 'therapy'? I may understand the concept behind it, but in an anime I don't see how it makes the show more 'meaningful' because of alienating character behaviour. Pardon me, because I've never fully watched Evangelion, but I want strong characters, not ones who've got every reason/excuse in the book for totally undesirable behaviour on any level.

I guess there could be interest there, but I'm not too into seeing that kind of stuff in anime. I just don't think they mesh very well in the end.

I think it is. It is one of the last quality, fully hand drawn anime series. I felt it was worth watching based on that alone.

I was thinking. Another reason why I dig on some anime, is due to the fact that it will take advantage of genres that live action won't or ones that haven't fully been realized, exploited, or aren't popular in the West.  I tend to like cyberpunk and steampunk. As far as visual media, there isn't much created here related to those genres outside of Blade Runner. While the movies aren't so hot, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex seasons 1 & 2 are pretty cool -- as is the first GitS manga series, the Dominion manga, and Appleseed manga (Masamune Shirow does pretty well with that genre).

I would recommend it on mute either way with closed captioning on.

Japanese voice acting is some of the most bland. With English and other language voice acting, regardless of whether it's bad, at least it sounds like they're trying. There's also little to no variation [in Japanese voice acting] -- like they use the same 4 or 5 voice actors for everything. Though, I think Japanese voice acting is so popular just because people like listening to what they don't understand.

I feel the opposite. There seemed to be a little to no effort in the English VAs for many, many years.  The fact that there were so few quality products, and the select few that were decent stood head and shoulders above the rest, is testament to this. The pool of English VAs also seems quite a bit smaller. It might help that I watch a wide varitey of anime era wise. I don't watch that much new anime.

I can't disagree with this. Sometimes I like this to help set atmosphere if the environment is supposed to be quasi alien -- sort of like Panzerese in PD. My preference for native language isn't solely a Japanese thing. If the movie is German, I prefer German. If it is French, I prefer French. I guess it is just a purity issue for me.

GANTZ

Have you read the Manga of GANTZ? Man I guess is completely better than the anime, and I´m reading the second phase right now. If you haven´t read it, I will give you a good advice and give it a look.

There's also little to no variation [in Japanese voice acting] -- like they use the same 4 or 5 voice actors for everything.
Sound like Hollywood only got 13 scripts.

Bah, maybe the lack of understanding Japanese made Heat become so.
My advice: Watch more anime, especially mechas ones, like GGG or Gurren-Lagann, the VA are..........gods.

Sorry, I'm not a Japanophile, so I refuse to waste anymore of my time on such things.

And, I hate mechs. I hate anything to do with mechs.

So watching animes and adoring the japanese make me become a Japanophile huh ? That's fine with me, considering the goods and entertaining moments they offered.

I think it's just meant to refer to people who love all things that come from Japan for that reason alone, not on actual merit.

There is this one super Otaku nerdy guy at my school and I'm like "oh my gosh. You're such an otaku!" and he was like "*tear of joy* No one has ever called me that before" it was like he thought he had arrived.

......Hum, It's a good ending after all, I think you should finish it, Cammy.
I heard it was a great serie, but I won't watch it because it reminds me of Evangelion.
Yes, Evangelion with a good ending.

I watch a decent amount of anime. I'd have to say my favorite anime show and movie has to be Full Metal Alchemist and Princess Mononoke. Those two are just amazing to me. The shows I have seen, and liked are: FMA, Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Escaflowne, DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, Wolf's Rain, Rurouni Kenshin/ Samurai X, Gundam Wing, Tri-Gun, S-Cry-Ed, many ghibli films, case closed, DB and some anime movies here and there. I probably did miss a few, but I'm pretty sure that's the bulk. Other than randomly watching one of these shows over when I feel like it, I barley watch anime. Sometimes I get into new ones, and have my eye on a couple when I have the cash to purchase them, after I've seen a couple of episodes and decide if it's worth it.

Are there any anime series that you still like and find original and inspiring?

I bought a boxed set for a series called Planetes and I thought it was absolutely amazing and original. It's about a guy named Hachimaki that works for a company that cleans up space debri. That may sound kind of silly/lame, but it focuses more on Hachi and everyone around him. The anime started off a bit rocky, but it has one of the best endings ever. And the theme song is awesome.

Besides that series, my favorite animes are Neon Genesis Evangelion, Now and Then Here and There, Magic Knight Rayearth, Sailor Moon, Noein, Akira, X/1999, Welcome to the N.H.K., and Genshiken (funniest series EVER). I'm also planning to buy a drama series called Nobody's Boy Remi that came out in the seventies.

Basically everything Miyazaki has ever done is excellent and I would say probably the  highest quality animation I've ever seen out of any studio, Japanese or otherwise.

I'm pretty international when it comes to my taste in animation though but these days most televised serial anime seems so terrible to me.  Last good ones I've seen though are  the Tekkon Kinkreet movie and some old Gegege no Kitarou cartoons.

Lesse... Currently watching Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagann, Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpuchou, Ookiku Furikabutte, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Baccano.

I'd definitely recommend Tokyo Majin to anyone here, it's got a really similar style to Shin Megami Tensei and it's pretty much the closest you could get to a Megaten anime currently. (despite being based on an entirely different game series)

I've faded out a bit. I was first introduced to anime through Akira,Ninja scroll, Robotech, and the Guyver series. I  was big into it in those days of my youth because it was fresh and new to me. Then I moved on to Trigun,Full Metal alchemist,Samurai Champloo, Cow boy bebop, Wolf reighn, Bleach, Hell-sing and Inuyasha. I loved all those shows but as anime began flooding us with more and more stuff I became a bit disenchanted with it. Princess Mononoke, Ki Ki's delivery  service, and Grave of the fireflies restored my faith in the genre a bit but not enough  to be a hard core otaku.

Now I like creating my  own characters and stories that are somewhat "inspired" by anime but also my real life. I admire "fan artists" but I can only get into being an illustrator if I'm working with my own original material.

Yea yea, anime and manga, one of my many love/hate relationships.^^

Like RPGs I love anime series as long as they last and hate them as soon as they are over BECAUSE they are over. ;-)

Right now I watch Claymore, Heroic Age, Seire no Moribito and (as soon as I have it complete) D.Gray Man. For Megaten similarities I highly recomend Tokio Majin, especially with the second season coming up. Other great series are Blood+, Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto, Burst Angels, Witch Hunter Robin, Hellsing (of course) and Wolf's Rain.

I allso like everything based on Masamune Shirows works, like Ghost in the Shell and Appleseed, but that's a metter of personal taste.^^

I just wish  anime would encourage more people to be original. Instead it makes legions of fans that draw their favorite characters over and over. I know fan art has it's place but whenever I  do fan art (a rare occurrence) I feel guilty I'm riding on the coat tails of the actual creator to boost my own popularity.

Even lovers of anime art push  illustrators to do nothing but fan service. If I draw teen titan or FF7 hentai "Bam!" instant curiosity! If I do fan art of obscure less well known characters or completely original characters I get no views at all.

Anime "fan boyism" and "fan girlism" can sour my love of the genre at times.

It's sad to see original characters are ignored in that way,but it can't be helped..

Only watching the anime on Adult Swim, but I did get into that one anime Shounen Onmyouji, and no it's not Yaoi either.

I'm glad Bleach got ported over to Adult-swim . It was  a good series worthy of reaching a bigger audience. Of the "light hearted anime" I was infactuated with One Piece awhile but couldn't get into Zach Bell. I watched a few episodes of "DEARS" but it came off as Love hina only with  sci fi  elements. Aka one guy gets assaulted by 5 or so unique female characters that compete for his attention or simply beat the crap out of him while calling him a "pervert". I thought  the teacher enthuaistic about sex was funny though.

I'm a big anime watcher, not really limited to Adult Swim, since I have Netflix. From Netflix, I've watched: Chobits, Final Fantasy Unlimited, Chrno Crusade, Azumanga Daioh, Escaflowne, Outlaw Star, Gundam Wing, Evangalion, Martian Successor Nadesco, Saiyuki(sucked), Nerima Daikon Brothers, .hack//Roots, .hack//Legend of Twilight, Neo Ranga(sucked), Aquarian Age, Pani Poni Dash, Get Backers, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, Yu Yu Hakusho, and a few others I've forgotten.

I discovered anime about a year ago and got pretty into it - Elfen Lied, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Be-Bop, Outlaw Star and Tokyo Majin were all pretty cool. I liked Bleach for a while, but got sick of that Inoe (or whatever her name was....flimsy female character) and the fillers. I always hated Naruto (that must have a goddamned ARMY of cosplayers) and One Piece (animation was too slow). My boyfriend currently watches Gurren Lagann (he's obsessed with mecha >.<) and my other friends watch things like Ergo Proxy.

I kinda got bored with anime though. It's so expensive to buy (then again, who buys anime?) and I have a much bigger passion for RPGs. Plus, after just a year of watching anime, it's so easy to spot the constitutions it's made for itself. So many series are so similar and boring and the character stereotypes just get irritating after a while - the hero with an annoying whiny voice, the huge-boobied heroine, the unfunny sidekick, the strange Japanese humour....it just got to me in the end. The very slow animation and point-blank terrible animation (last episode of Tokyo Majin anyone?) in some cheaper animes are plain painful to watch sometimes.

Well, I find RPGs and anime kinda work pretty close together. Well, that is, if you're playing a JRPG. Ergo Proxy is pretty cool, even though I've only seen 1 episode.

Youtube can do wonders if you want to watch any anime.

True. P3's intro video blew me away. The animation is sexy and I do like the character designs, although when I saw Lucifer's very "Kazuma" face I kinda wished for the old Megaten artist. I really love the way he draws faces.
