Title: Demonic Illustrations & Resources [Latest: Found that sprite site Pg. 4]
Post by: Jessicat on July 18, 2009, 08:59:50 PM
...and other related media [er, I mean stuff, not like, the spell XD]

I will attempt to post both "official" and "non-official" media relating to the demons encountered in the Megaten universe :3 Which I'm sure could be helpful if the Demonary ever gets finished [is it like, the never-ending project? XD]

Most recently I've uploaded a collection of Devil Summoner Raidou 2 demon screenshots (http://sharebee.com/be04185d) AND a big collection of demons from the Japanese SMTII guide/artbook (http://sharebee.com/e1aaf9e4), [found the artbook, don't actually own it. As for the screenshots, found them somewhere on a Gamefaqs thread ^^;]

If anyone wants any card pictured in a bigger resolution, just let me know and I'll get around to it for ya ^^;
Devil Children TCG (http://sharebee.com/1140198d)
SMT Nocturne TCG (http://sharebee.com/4d1f3f7e)

There's also all these from around the 'net: [a couple were posted here as well, but I just wanna throw them all in one place XD]

Images/Image Compilations
I think everyone knows Dokuganryu/Be Your True Mind (http://www.dokuganryu.com/scans.html).
Jack Frost's Corner (http://www.popanime.net/megami/gallery/misc.html); has various scans and a Devil Summoner Compendium (http://www.popanime.net/megami/gallery/compendium/compendium.zip) to download.
A [selected?] compilation of older demon artwork from one of Kaneko's Compendium books (http://sharebee.com/3d7c180a) [there are 3 published; 2 with demons, 1 with NPCs and game characters]. Can't remember where I found this ^^;
Persona 3 Tarot Deck (http://sharebee.com/64ec1a25); can't remember where I found this one either ^^;
The Heretic Mansion (http://www.phpsimplicity.com/heretic/): with both an online resource and a downloadable fusion application (http://www.phpsimplicity.com/heretic/downloads/heretic_mansion_v1_1.zip).
One of the SMTOI Japanese Wikis (http://imagine.gkwiki.com/index.html); the last segment in the middle column leads to demons sorted by alignment and race.
Kawaii Art Zone 2.0 (http://www.kawaiidream.net/categories.php?cat_id=794) - A french website with a ton of high-quality art from video games, anime, manga and more! I think you need to register to take a peek, but it's free [and thankfully there's an English option to view the site as well :p]
Can't remember how I came across THIS (http://homepage3.nifty.com/obo-keibo/mega_itm.html) page, but there's a few small scans of the earlier SMT TCG here.

Sprites
Devil Children Light & Dark sprites can be found here: 1 (http://www.bogleech.com/gba-demikids1.html) | 2 (http://www.bogleech.com/gba-demikids2.html)
THIS (http://hkaityo.hp.infoseek.co.jp/dq/) Japanese website has a TON of sprites from just about everywhere in the early Megaten days as well as a bunch of other games XD [Specifically SMTI & II for SNES, MT & MTII for NES, If... for SNES]
Here's the site with a ton of early game sprites HERE (http://f46.aaa.livedoor.jp/~aqul/aton/). A great resource!

PDFs
Goetia: The Lesser Key of Solomon: Direct (http://www.lucifer.tw/fantasy/artist/devil/pic/goetia.pdf) | Alt. (http://sharebee.com/a1815a58)
Dictionnaire Infernal Demonographia: Direct (http://www.lucifer.tw/fantasy/artist/devil/pic/plancy.pdf) | Alt. (http://sharebee.com/b9ef1a19)
Easton's Bible Dictionary: Direct (http://www.lucifer.tw/fantasy/artist/devil/pic/easton.pdf) | Alt. (http://sharebee.com/ee2d5c79)
Pseudomonarchia Daemonum: Direct (http://www.lucifer.tw/fantasy/artist/devil/pic/daemonum.pdf) | Alt. (http://sharebee.com/449f5200)
All from HERE (http://www.lucifer.tw/index.php).
I also recommend taking a look around TheOccult.bz (http://theoccult.bz/main.php) [if registration is open] for a ton of interesting PDFs, movies, and other stuff from Mythology and Alchemy to Astrology and Shamanism and everything in between XD I'd post torrents but apparently the way they're processed only the registered user who downloads the torrent can use it [it's weird, don't ask ^^;]

*EDIT* Added Sept. 8, '09
Devil Survivor (http://sharebee.com/0c44ed86) - an image consisting of every [obtainable] demon's profile page in English.

Other
SMT Dictionary (http://www.geocities.jp/dds_dictionary/DDS.html) - Has a huge amount of entries on demons and stuff. You might need a couple of decent translator sites to get the full effect of the details sometimes though XD

I also own some RL art/guide books and some of those fan anthologies, I'll write up a list of what they are later, but here are the pics ^^;
JP Guidebooks (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v430/Jessicat_715/SMT/Merch/IMG00318.jpg) | JP Comics & SMTIII Guidebook (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v430/Jessicat_715/SMT/Merch/IMG00324.jpg) | JP Comics (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v430/Jessicat_715/SMT/Merch/IMG00322.jpg) | Stack of all books (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v430/Jessicat_715/SMT/Merch/IMG00315.jpg) | Misc. Art books & SMT:Khan English manga (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v430/Jessicat_715/SMT/Merch/IMG00317.jpg)

Also, if anyone has anything else to add, post it here! :D And enjoy! :3

A lot of this is more for the Encyclopedia and collectibles area (and other specialized pages that should probably exist)

The "demonary" really just requires people help with the Google Spreadsheet (http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=piKSlpkg0llAny-VoXNRkKQ&hl=en) effort to account for all the in-game stats. Also in-game graphics and sprites can go in the demonary databases. But it's really a game centric part of the website (should it ever really get off the ground)

I don't know if Google Spreadsheets is just not engaging enough for people, or if it is just too hard to figure out / too resource hungry, but I can't think of a better way in the meantime, and even beginning to do something more homegrown that everyone could work on simultaneously would be a major development commitment.

PS: What I've set things up to do, is to take a more or less complete spreadsheet and turn it into a page like this(http://www.digitaldevildb.com/demonary/velvet-room/persona/)

I've never seen any of the illustrations from the "one of Kaneko's Compendium books" link, so I'm guessing this is book 2 (the second devil volume)

If the scans were better quality I might put them up (though without permission) as Tony had a page for the first book (which I've since added to the books section of the site) but doesn't have the second (the third is character artwork)

Icy (founder of the wikia megamitensei.wikia.com wiki) recently purchased either both of the devil books or all three, and was scanning them into the wiki (though I don't think he got past the first book before he stopped doing this) ...anyway, he promised (more or less) me he would make an archive of his scans for the second book once he has them finished and get it to me somehow so we can put it on the site. His scans are higher resolution than the ones we have for the first book and look good. If he ever finishes I will have to write some gd (not goddamn) code to generate multiple resolution versions of the file (like I did for the P4 manga) so they'll match the first books page.

PS: Best Lilith ever, except her face is a bit lopsided. The SMT remake illustration wasn't bad except for Kaneko's new cankle obssession (really, wtf is with the cankles???) ... In general all around the the devils in the second volume are more interesting compositions to me.

Oooh, cool pics BoreS, thanks for sharing! :3 I think I should make a swag thread to show off our own merch :p

I guess I was kind of thinking "pokedex" instead of "demonary" then :p Something that shows the demon, what game's it's appeared in and what it looked like, attacks it learns and if it evolves, and those compendium info blurbs too :p [yup, total pokedex XD but it would be very informative! ^^;;]

And I actually have a chapter from the Devil Children [Red/Black] manga translated to English. Apparently the first 2 books or something were translated [and made available through whatever the hell iirc is XD]. Haven't found the rest though, and I think the fan-translation site/sites affiliated with it are long since dead ;>> I'll try to upload the one chapter i do have if I can find it ^^;

Jessicat, nice idea  :smile:
Not about the translate are you talking about?

You know, we have something like that going on (http://www.digitaldevildb.com/wiki/Bael)

The wiki pages are starting to look really really nice, and Google seems to be indexing them at a good rate (I guess I should be writing something on the wikia partnership page)

Oooh, yea, like that! Only I think it should have an attack list too :p [Hm, does Baal Avatar from Nocturne have any relation to the Bael in the former SMT games? ^^;]
Also, sorta related, but I can barely see those discussion links and stuff on the right side of the site; they're really bright. maybe put them in a more visible colour? It looks like signs of life on the site, but for some reason I never really noticed them until now, I thought they were the affiliate site list ^^;

And yes BoreS, that's the same chapter I was talking about :D I just thought there were more chapters availble in English though, maybe I have to start searching the 'net XD

The stuff on the side is just RSS feeds of the comments and blogs in the Megaten Fandom list (not much yet)

^The reason they're not as easy to see (though I would think hard to not notice) is they're not officially part of the layout. They're that way so they blend into the background. If you hover over them they should be easy to read. Basically it's bonus stuff for people with wider displays. Officially the site is supposed to be fully viewable on an 800x600 display. Anyway, design wise I don't want them to distract too much from the site. They're making a bit of a problem though, a long with a lot of stuff in the sidebar, because google uses all those words to index pages so searches can lead you to a page that only has a word in the side info which is pretty lame... I'm working on it.

As for the Bael page, that is just from the wiki pages. Whatever is in the wikia wiki is there. A lot of the devils and bosses do have skills listed in the wiki, but Bael is a little more neglected I guess. Just a page I was fixing up a little at the time.

There is stuff from the Baal boss in Nocturne on the wiki/Baal page, but it's supposed to be migrated to a new Baal (Nocturne boss) page. Satan's page has more crap like skills (http://www.digitaldevildb.com/wiki/Satan)

Well now I feel 'tarded for not realizing the wiki pages ^^;;; Oh, okay, wasn't sure if that side-side column stuff was intentionally that way or not ^^;
Also going to add links to the first post for a collection of Devil Summoner Raidou 2 demon screenshots (http://sharebee.com/be04185d) AND a big collection of demons from the Japanese SMTII guide/artbook (http://sharebee.com/e1aaf9e4). Not sure how helpful these will be, but thought I'd share anyways ^^;

As for my collection of books, I have:

Official [looking] books
-Digital Devil Story 10th Anniversary Book
-Devil Summoner guidebook
-SMTIII Nocturne guidebook
-Digital Devil Saga guidebook
-Digital Devil Saga ultimate final guidebook
-digital Devil Saga 2 fanbook
-Devil Children TCG guidebook
-SMT P4 Visual Data artbook
-Art of SMT P3 artbook
-SMT Khan [I had to find out, and yes, it IS just as bad as everyone claims it to be ;>>]
-Digital Devil Apocalypse artbook
-SMT fanbook[?]

Fan art books [yes I am nerdy and like fan art 8D]
-Devil Children 4-koma anthology
-SMTIII Nocturne comic anthology x3
-SMTIII Nocturne 4-koma anthology x4
-Digital Devil Saga 4-koma anthology
-Persona 3 comic anthology

I'll have to see if there's anything scan-worthy in them [I know the 10th anniversary one has some demon art comparison pages for a few demons.]

*edit* guess this is a start - the usual suspects :p [sorry, the quality sucks ^^;]

It's from the bigger SMT fanbook thing I have [the one with the different game cover arts on the front]. That might be tough unless I either snap the binding or pull out the page, but I'll give it another try...after work [I should be leaving soon too XD]. There's a few other demons and other character illustrations from a bunch of games.

O.O holycrap BoreS that's a really huge collection! [You have a whole shelf for all those? :p] I only collect the ones that look interesting to me [because I'm cheap ^^;]

...I'll go fire up my scanner :3

^Yeah... I guess that's as good as it gets. The blur to the side does seem a little strange... I'm kind of wondering why it's there. Every scanner I've ever had would not blur something like that. Even if I snapped a photo with a digital camera :confused:

I think it's as important as anything to get a nice version of this graphic out on the internet :biggrin:

Would look nice on the website, somehow somewhere...

PS: Speaking of guides, I have two of the best guidebooks ever for Shin Megami Tensei and Kyuuyaku, both in the same fashion. I'm not really sure what to call them, but they're so nice I'd collect everyone of these ever made for a Megaten game. I've no doubt these are the finest ever produced. I should know because I have like 3 for SMT2 that are all such crap combined they don't amount to a fraction of the value of these guides.

All I can say is they're part of a series. They have colourful dust jackets that appear identical to the game boxarts, but the paperback binding is skyblue with white print on it. I'm pretty sure they're part of an official Super Famicom series that might've carried over from/to other consoles (maybe just Nintendo)

While I can say this scanner I have is is kinda old, the blurry part on once side is the where the spine of the book is [I didn't want to rip out the page XD] I bet if someone wasn't graphically challenged [like me] they could edit it and make it look...better? ^^;

Wanna share some pictures of your stuff too? :p

Yeah but yeah, every scanner I have would not be blurred, it would just scan the folded page the way it is, unless there is some odd kind of material the pages are made out of... even if you put like an apple on the scanner it should look fine/mostly in focus. Just unfortunate the way it blurs so. I could probably doctor it after making the image much smaller. If you're ever in a kinkos or somewhere you could try a different scanner.

I'm not trying to be a pain in the ass, it's just a cool (really iconic) illustration that would be nice to have in focus :smokin:

Okay, fine :grumble: I went and scanned it again, still a bit blurry...found the same pic in another book [the 10th yr one...only it's smaller, and a very small bit of the left side of the pic is cut off from the page/not in the book,] I'll drop both pics here. Oh, and one other one of a few random equips. Because I thought they looked cool XD And since I had the book open, I scanned the other page with Lucifer/Louis Cypher. [yay img spam! 8D]

These are of these are really interesting. It's cool to see characters not done by Kazuma Kaneko. Any idea who the artist is btw? I'm assuming it's Atlus commissioned/owned artwork.

The smaller one is definitely of worse quality. But it could definitely help for doctoring the end of the sword / hopefully producing an image of some resolution that doesn't appear shopped.

I'm thinking about maybe using it as an avatar around the site, like on the games page. It's cooler, and the megamitensei.wikia wiki is using the same graphic we're using, so I'd rather have the cooler one maybe and then maybe use the old bros. avatar on the wiki pages to match the wikia logo.

PS: There's a good chance in an avatar situation the tip of the sword would get cutout anyway.

PPS: Since you seem to be knowledgeable of the Devil Children based games, do you think you could maybe find time to put something on our DC page (http://www.digitaldevildb.com/games/devil-children-titles/)

Just something basic like (http://www.digitaldevildb.com/games/persona-titles/)

We could also use a DC avatar.... but let's not let this thread get offtopic :smokin:

Well rather than hunting down the original illustrations thread hilighting the Demi-Pascal illustration, I thought I'd post this here:

http://zoome.jp/kyitrin/diary/4

Yep, the Mega-CD actually has a Majuu Pascal, though it's not quite like the illustration (could be the same graphic as Kerberos -- but the name is clearly Pascal)

I also read there is a special version of Baal in this one based on the MT2 design. The name is spelled slightly differently as well in MT1/2; バアル instead of バール I think.

Also worth pointing out the sprite is very different, so I'm curious to know if all the sprites were redone for this version, because if so this goes from my would love to have list, to most wanted list.... (even though I'm not personally a fan of SMT)

^Just on a lark, does anyone have this rom? I'd put it on the site somewhere if we can track it down.

PS: Before I close this page/reboot I will screenshot the relevant frame if I can.

^Well, I'm sure Kerberos shares the same graphic. Same skillset/stats clearly. I'm guessing the story Kerberos you meet around Tokyo Destiny Land is also named Pascal. I never really liked the idea that Pascal is Kerberos. I prefer to think Kerberos is summoned by sacrificing Pascal (in turn imparting special loyalty to Kerberos) ....but then I really don't like SMT. Heresy I say.

Edited: But I dunno. He does have more of a dog tail instead of Kereberos' rat tail thing. My favorite Kerberos is the Kyuuyaku one (ultra rare concept art is in the forum banner)

Well, we will always host our own files. I guess we might have a reputation of "hotlinking" images, but it's just out of laziness/expediency.

When and if that happens someone can upload whatever files to the website, including possibly the ones at megaten.ru if you don't mind sharing :rainbow:

Things tend to happen slow around here. I guess we are more about endurance than cast iron zeal.

PS: I'm a little curious what your restriction specifically is about "foreign countries", eg. were you technically abusing your host's policies in inviting me to download the Mega CD SMT?

In case of excess of foreign over Russia's traffic more than 1Gb, the server ceases to give content to the foreign network. Do you personally know anyone who has been able to play this file?

I ended up busting my ass tonight just to get "Gens32 Surreal" to appear to work in Mega-CD mode. But the MCD bios doesn't seem to recognize it as a game disc. If I mount the cue file in the download I can play it like a music cd (kinda neat) ...but the emulator just puts the name in window title ("Sin Megami...") but otherwise the Mega-CD goes into it's music CD player mode, but doesn't seem to detect any music.

Anyway, if someone made it work with an emulator (I'm not going to run out and find a MegaCD) in any way, if you can give me advice, I'd be happy to write up a README file with English instructions to include in the download.

That's messed up^ (edited: just an English expression)

And here I was trying to play it as a CD :doh:

Still, according to the Gens32 readme files playing sega-cd game this way is complicated in the sound dept. Maybe I need a newer version, but there doesn't seem to be any sound in the game.

Quote from: Gens.txt
* Running a Sega-CD/Mega-CD Game from a CD image/Mp3 file:
----------------------------------------------------------

Gens also supports CD images (backups) in .iso/.bin/.raw format with .mp3
audio. It is recommended that when using CD images that you have both the CD
image and the correct .mp3 files available as many games will not run if the
audio tracks aren't present.

For Gens to correctly identify any .mp3 audio tracks for your CD images they
have to be placed in the same directory as the CD image file with the same
file name as the CD image followed by a track number. For example if you are
using a CD image called Blaster.iso with three .mp3 files you would need to
put all the files in the same directory and rename them like this:

     Blaster.iso
     Blaster 02.mp3
     Blaster 03.mp3
     Blaster 04.mp3

There are a couple of important points to remember when setting up your CD
images & .mp3 files for use with Gens:

     * The CD Image should NOT be numbered, it won't work if you have
       "Blaster 01.iso" instead of "Blaster.iso"!
     * The CD image acts as track one so the first audio track will always
       be track two+.
     * The track numbers must also be a TWO DIGIT number: 02, 03, ..10 etc,
       NOT 2, 3,...10.
     * The space between the file name and the track number is optional.

[+ Gens actually calculates the track order by looking at the numbers at the
   end of the .mp3 files. You can use any numbers you want, for example 10,
   27, 32... however it's easier to rename them in the way shown above.]

Once you've set up your CD image and .mp3 files as shown you're ready to
begin.

Instead of clicking on Boot CD in the File menu click on Open Rom as if you
were going to load a normal Genesis/Mega-Drive game. The Open file window
will appear as usual, click on the arrow on the "Files of type" box and
select "Sega CD isos files (*.iso,*.bin,*.raw)" from the drop down list. Now
locate your CD image file and click on the Open button to begin loading the
game. Gens will now initialize Sega-CD/Mega-CD emulation and begin reading
the CD image/.mp3 files. Please note it can take a while before the Sega-CD
/Mega-CD bios screen appears as Gens needs to calculate the length of all
the files before it can begin.

^Sounds like you gotta generate .mp3 files somehow :confused:

PS: How btw did you make that exe? It's dangerous to run exe files off the internet, they can install malware/etc. on your computer. So I'd like to know how you made it so I can see if the program you used is safe or not :sweatdrop:

And slightly off-topic, but I'm still searching for a way to rip that SMT Documentary DVD as well [I've ripped it but the file is weird; the actual disc still works fine x.x I hate technological incompetence, lol]

I think the best thing to do at this point with the "documentary" would be to break all the chapters up into their own files. Then we can upload all the chapters to the website, and embed them in a page where people could watch them one at a time. It would be awesome to have the anime and anything else up as well.

In general I think we should just provide everything possible on the website until Atlus/company complain about anything. No images of new games of course. In general it's actually completely legal to provide game images if the games aren't being printed for retailers anymore. But with the rise of "virtual consoles" and crap I kinda wonder if that legal precedent still holds, or if the virtual consoles are the industries way of answering that legal decision. Technically the virtual console game is a different product (mainly sold for convenience in my opinion -- I buy mostly VC type stuff myself) so maybe legally images of the original games are still totally legit to host.

Video is ok as long as it is not high quality I think. For non-retail stuff like that documentary though the quality should not matter (it might in Japan if anyone cared)

Post by: Jessicat on September 07, 2009, 04:22:41 PM
Hm, well since I've uploaded it on Veoh/Viddler, I'd have to just re-upload them here as movie files right? [Gah, when my laptop melted those movies went with it ;>>] The quality of the movies should be okay though. But as for the non-movie parts, they aren't really doable unless I rip the whole disc [which I am still trying to do. Arg.] The chapters are split weirdly though, the 3 Kaneko interview parts and one other small chapter were actually integrated into the "making of" part when being watched, but they're separate on the disc o.O;

Going through some old files, I have a few trailer-ish things from the first Devil Summoner Raidou, Nocturne, DemiKids, and IMAGINE. Not sure if those are noteworthy additions though ^^;

You know that blue Kerberos in the forum banner? I actually have a picture of him in one of my books [the 10th anniversary one; there's a 2 page section about Pascal/Kerberos/Cerberus] I'll see if I can scan it later today ^^; I also have another Cerberus version from I think Megami Tensei 2. It's yellow and green and ugly o.O;; I think I have a picture of the three headed Cerberus too [but it's monochrome ;>>] not sure if that'd be any use.

And the new logo looks good! [See? On the wiki page you still don't see the end of Jack O'Lantern's sword :p]

I think I'll just wait until you guys find a solution before I try out that game [I probably won't get too far in it anyways XD]

*edit* okay, I lied, I have both a colour and mono version of 3-headed Cerberus XD I remember finding the colour on a random fanpage somewhere a few years ago. The site seems to be dead/no longer updated. The mono one is a background image from the SMT TCG homepage. I think that site is still around XD

If you really have a version of Kerberos in the forum banner I'd very much like to see it. Plus my source for the banner is really crap (an old worn out Kyuuyaku guide's back cover) ...so we could use a better scan for the forum. That might inspire me to finally replace the forum banner with something better :doh:

However the general quality of the book cover print is very nice... the wear on it not so much. It's not a crap dotmatrix type print. Still at that size, any version would probably be better.

The tri-headeded one is awesome. I will add yours to the wiki page eventually. It is from Soul-Hackers I'm virtually certain. Still the Kyuuyaku concept art is my favorite. If I could have an artbook quality print of any Megaten image I would choose that one. It's so rare too.

I'm not sure but I've never had a scanner that sort of blurring going on. It could be light reflecting off the page somehow if it is really glossy. If it's just depth of field blurring, if you ever go to get a replacement scanner (they seem to cost a lot these days but like 10yrs ago you could buy good ones for 20$ or less, they were even giving them away??) ...I know the last cheapo scanner I had was sold as "3D scanner" meaning you could scan anything clearly... not just flat stuff. It works fine to put anything on top of it and scan away. Will even scan the ceiling just fine if you take the top completely off.

Another great alternative is just use a nice digital camera. My latest camera was quite cheap and the quality is just amazing. Perfect really. Just taking pictures of stuff yields better scans than any scanner I've ever used. Photographs might also come out more natural like an eye sees, because maybe scanners pick up too much of the grain and artifacts of the printing process (magnified by the scanner)

Let us know if you ever come across a different version. If I get bored one day I might yet give it a shot. Would look a lot better if I can pull it off somehow. I'm pretty clever in the image processing dept.

I have been gradually repairing things... if only to assuage my guilt about it for a little while longer. The website will be moving to a new webhost very soon. That should make search and other things possible again on the website.

Otherwise nothing new is happening or apparently on the horizon. The move should feel seamless, though I don't think anyone would notice if it wasn't. I might make a last ditch effort to repair everything I can think of remaining before making the move.
